Was i in the wrong?

I was driving home in the estate I live today, I come around a corner, this girl was reversing out of a parking spot, I stopped thinking she would see me and allow me to pass, I should say that the gap I came in through is not wide enough for 2 cars to pass each other safely.

I waited until she realised I was there, her "bum" was blocking my way so I couldn't go around her as there was parked cars either side. I motioned to her to reverse back or straighten up so that I could pass her, she refused and told me to reverse back around the corner to allow her to exit. I got out of the car and told her if she straightened up I would be able to pass her... if I were to reverse I'd be reversing back out onto a main road, which is a blind corner due to there being a wall blocking the view.

I got back into the car and lit a ciggie, I was in no hurry, then her neighbour decided to tell me I was speeding around the corner (obviously just backing up the neighbour) I NEVER speed... absolutely and utterly never and I can say that hand on heart... but that's an aside...

I sat there until she finally (2/3 minutes after she realised I was going nowhere) straightened up and allowed me to pass...

Do you think I was wrong, I was sure that if a car is already on the road then they have the right of way?

1st rule of driving, if you're reversing, you've got NO right of way what so ever.

might be worth mentioning that I am also a woman so don't think that is relevant could have been anyone....

You where completely n the right. fiar play to ya for not listening to the bullying neighbor and standing your ground.

The neighbour happened to be at her car as I turned the corner and only decided to get involved when I got back into the car and wouldn't move, I have to say I was livid.. but kept the cool and that's not like me! I was more angry at her sayin I was speeding...

was she good looking? usually when it comes to women drivers, driving skill/ ability is inversely proportional to looks.

x2 on the stop smoking. nearly E10 for 20 opportunities to give yourself cancer and smell awful.

but yes, i reckon you we're in the right, fair play for sticking to your guns :)

    firstly...its a woman

    Really??? That old chestnut?? :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

OP you were 100% in the right. She should have either driven back in to the space or straightened up and allowed you to pass. She obviously never checked to see if anything was coming before starting to reverse. I think if it were me in your position i would have been tempted to tell her where to find a copy of the rules of the road and/or a decent driving instructor, and her neighbour where they could stick their opinion :p

When I was waitin on her movin the hubby of the neighbour came out to give out to me, I asked him if he wanted me to get a copy of the rules of the road for him..... he wasn't overly impressed..... just wound up the window and continued to wait...

Whatever else, it is *illegal* to reverse onto a main road (or even onto a priority road)

Well seeing as your making sweeping sexist jokes about women it must be my fault too! I suppose you'd like a sandwich with that too!??!:mad:

Deutschlandfurimmer is a teenager, so his remark could be forgiven due to his youth and inexperience. What's your excuse?

    Give up the smokes o.p.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,609 ✭✭✭stoneill

I would do almost exactly as you did - except I wouldn't get out of my car.
I'd just sit there and let her wonder what you are doing.
Obviously she's not going anywhere until you move - and you are not going anywhere until she moves - eventually it will dawn on her.
Also - bear in mind, no matter who is at fault, if you step out of your car then you are seen as the aggressor in a road rage incident, even if there is no rage!

    Give up the fags.

Peeps don't be turning this into a sexist rant... the others were joking... I took it as that and took no offence being a woman driver... the world is going mental that you can't make a quip....

Anyhoo I see the point maybe I shouldn't have gotten out of the car, but I was very nice to her and spoke softly.....

Still planning on giving up the smokes, but maybe if enough ppl point it out I might get the hint and actually do it!! x

You were smart about it, all told. One of my friends was driving down a backroad in rural Kerry, nowhere near big enough for two cars to pass.

Woman driving against him pulls halfheartedly in at a stupid spot and waves him on. He waves her on as he's pulled in far enough to give her plenty of space to pass but nevertheless, she waves him on.

Eventually, he gives up and slowly drives past her, gently scratching her rear door and beside her boot.
She claims off his insurance, 100% his fault as she was stopped, goodbye no claims bonus.

@all (including kbannon) - please drop the sexist "jokes", they're derailing the thread and causing offence to other posters.

Any sizable estate has a number of twats you don't want to be friendly with.

    OP your 100% correct

On the smokes issue I went cold turkey 10 days ago, it was easy, however nobody warned me I'd be coughing up some nasty stuff. Still glad though
