I'm not sure if this bargain alert is applicable to Ireland so apologies if this should've gone in the other forum. Basically Tesco in Britain are selling these BluRays for £5 each .

Anyone know if any Tescos here have them?

Moved to Bargain Alerts.... but I'd be very suprised if it applied here.

That "various items at 1p deal in Tesco UK" didn't apply here.

They don't even sell Blu-rays at Tesco here in Letterkenny.... They're so behind the times.

Nice one, I'll have a root around my local Tesco Extra tomorrow:)

Shouldn't "Inglourious Basterds" intentionally misspelt title get around the swear filter btw?:p

Fairly off topic, but wasn't 28 days later shot using fairly low definition digi cameras? Is it worth getting on Blu-ray?
    /edit
Think I'll give that one a miss!

Really? The Sligo one does... they don't have many, but they do sell them.

Yep, have warned about this myself!

True, but the video upscaling done may be better than your own TV etc, also it would come with better sound, so if DVD and Blu Ray same price then BluRay best option, but I suppose if you already owned DVD then BluRay may not be worth it normally, but £5 yes

Sorry, just read your post properly so it seems it was a bad transfer so maybe not worth it

They're utterly pointless unless you have a setup which can make the most of them, in which case it'd be a crime to play standard definition content on it when there's hi def available!
Each to their own I suppose, but for me there wasn't any turning back after the first time I experienced a film at 1080p...

Tesco Coonagh Cross have a few of these, but for €10... Gotta love that exchange rate.

I am off to Enniskillen shortly, does anyone know if they are up north?
some good ones in that list.

My local in Sligo has a load of Blu-ray's at €10 (including plenty in that list) since they started selling Blu-rays..

    .. so I'm doubting that's a reduction.

Do you also prefer a cassette to a CD? ;)

Most Blu-Rays I have aren't much different from standard DVDs but the BBC nature documentaries look maginificent.

Watching Human Planet now on blu-ray and it looks amazing.

Same as Yellowstone, Galapagos, and so on.

Have you got a good audio / video setup though jayteecork? I find it hard to believe you think Blu-ray's "aren't much different from standard DVD's".

Most Blu-ray's I have look and sound head-and-shoulders above their DVD counterparts, with the exception of '28 Days Later' above obviously.

I've double-dipped on a few (Lord Of The Rings, Back To The Future, Alien Quadrilogy / Anthology etc) and there's no comparison to the DVD.

PS - I have 'Life' and 'Planet Earth' on Blu-ray.. and they do look superb alright!

I copied the list from elsewhere and it was spelt like that.

Yeah I would advise people to look up reviews from trusted sites/people on blurays before buying because like 28Days some Blu Ray releases are merely ports from the DVD copies.

The ones that Basq mentions were remastered and rescanned at a far superior resolution than what would've been used for DVD (ie. literally the resolution the film elements were scanned at 4k is the standard, 8k for special effects shots)

Is there a thread for discussion on this anywhere? I'd like to discuss it. Obviously this forum isn't the place.

Blueray isn't a new format like DVD was to VHS and DVDs aren't "bad" per se in the sense that you could point to a flaw in the format* (technically). With a side-by-side test of an excellent blueray you will certainly see the difference. Whether or not you will see any point in paying extra is up to you.

Blu-ray is a niche product - though far more widespread than Laserdisc was - and imo is not out to replace DVD but perhaps to compliment it. DVD is probably one of the most successful home products in decades even more so than VHS. There is a massive markup as discs are extremely cheap to produce.

You can now get films like a double pack of X-Men 1&2 for €3 in a shop. You can now get "foreign/world" films for a tener. This is a testament to DVD's success.

Hopefully (hoping against hope) Tesco here will start stocking blueray films. They're selling TVs, not sure if theyre actually selling the players though. At the minute Power City's €10 each for Warner Bluerays (€12 for some Sony releases) and HMV's two for €22 are the best deals.

*blueray benefits these new LCD and Plasma screens as well as digital projectors in the home. Blueray allows for more information on the disc ergo more an image with more detail and lossless audio.

I think I saw Planet Earth on blueray in HMV for €26. Picture quality is awesome. No sign of Baraka in the shops though which is supposed to be the leader.

    Here's a list of so-called "must-haves": http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-10207170-82.html
They just seem to be about the best that's available.

Bluray is great for the film buff. Distributors like Eureka, BFI and Arrow should hopefully do well.

There's been far too much cack released on BD - check yr local Gamestop and in 2nd hand you'll see the same type of crappy genre flicks made in the last few years.

    Nice and cheap from Amazon

Blu ray on the right film is a massive jump but in fairness there are a lot of films that are just on a blu ray disk with little or now upgrade and some like T2 ended up being almost worse !

The BBC stuff is stunning Planet Earth is €20.45, Human Planet is €33.45 and wonders of the solar system is €11.95. in Zavvi's monday madness today. Cant go wrong with any of them to show off Blu-ray's power.

Cheers but I was speaking about specifically in a shop. I was commenting on how the range offered off-the-shelf isn't as extensive as what is actually available.

This is surely a new phenomenom that didn't occur with DVD since DVD had become the standard slightly before buying DVDs online became so widespread (2003-2004, yes I know some had been buying online for years).

What is quite interesting with shop prices is how certain blueray prices are so similiar perhaps due to the selection/distributor/studio.

Would a separate blueray deals thread be worth running?

You'd change your mind if you saw District 9 or Sunshine on my 92 inch projector screen. The image quality urinates all over dvd.

There is nothing niche about BluRay (no "e"). And yes, there are 2 forums in "Tech" that would be more appropriate for this.

I've looked in a few Tescos and no sign of these. They have a few new release blurays and a few Disneys but nothing else.
