    Hi all,

I have a peugeot 307 (2006) wich I will be changing later this year, hubby checked the oil for me today and there was none:eek: He got some oil and filled it up - it took quite a lot close to 5 litres I think.

I know I hadn't checked in a couple of months but is this a sign of a bigger impending problem down the road?

If it took 5 L I would think you have done engine damage..

you're lucky you didn't leave it any longer to check the oil. The engine could've seized up! Sounds like worn piston rings, any bluey black smoke coming out of it when you drive? Or it may be a gasket leak, any oil spots where you park?

If it was still running there must have been some oil in it. And if he put 5 litres in theres a good chance he may have overfilled it which is also not good for the engine.

I don't think it took the full 5 L, but quite a lot of it. I must get it a full service and ask the mecahnic to pay close attention to the things mentioned.

    Thanks

I'd check the dip stick again and make sure it hasn't been over filled.

Yes, over-filling by a tiny bit isn't too bad but over-filling by a lot will cause the oil pressure to go over dangerous levels and would be detrimental to your engine. Don't drive it or turn the key until you know for sure. There is a sump plug under your engine block to drain any excess oil though so don't panic op.

A 307 petrol engine doesn't even take 5 liters of oil when fully drained so if he piut even 4 litres in then its vastly overfilled. It only needs to be perhaps a litre below maximum before it doesn't show on the dipstick.

Get it in to someone who knows what they are looking at. You could do as much damage with that much of an overfill then with not enough oil!.

Spoke to hubby on this again last night and it seems that I was misinformed:o He bought a 4L drum and when I checked it there is still about 2L left.... and they say women exagerate;)
I hope it will be ok now!

There is a lesson to be learned here, check your oil and don't wait for the car to tell you it needs oil.

Checking once a week is a good idea.
