I had a look down through the census form and I was bemused to see that under the question on ethnic or cultural background, Irish and Irish Traveller are two different categories.

Given that this is a government document, I take it that it's official, Travellers and Settled People are different.

Anyone else see any strange questions on the form?

Irish Traveller is a recognised ethnic minority in the UK, so they probably had to follow suit here.

Possibly because they are Irish in another country?
Here they are irish. Are irish people who live in bungalows a separate ethnic identity to those who live in flats?
Im not having a go but i genuinely dont see how they are a different ethnicity and would like it explained

    That's tame.

Apparently you can only be Irish if you're white

    Why the differential though?

meh, it just struck me as odd that it didn't follow the same format. Probably thinking too much about it!

AFAIK they get extra/different social welfare and better chance of social housing which is the only difference being part of this ''ethnic minority'' has.

    Pretty sure that's not true...

And I imagine Irish Traveller is put as a different group on the census form so the government can get an idea how many there are in the country. As with the rest of the questions.

That makes sense and i see the need to know that info alright but I still dont see how they are ethnicly different. They are still Irish but simply choose to live nomadically (Actually thats not particularly true now).
And their different culture makes them no different than someone from the islands or another county or rural familys....

I didn't start this thread to have a go at travellers so I hope no one else does.

I just wondered why travellers would be considered ethnically different. It doesn't make sense to me.

Chughes; Sort of bouncing off ye own observation there .....

I noticed how, this time, there's no opportunity to be 'Of British Traveller' descent. Just " Any Other White Background ".

So, " Irish " is now fine. " Irish Traveller " is now fine. But, British Romani now gets lumped with other invisibles, like " American " and " Australian ". All in a great, brushed under the carpet melting pot of 'White People ~ Non Irish'.

I find this interesting, if only because, last time round, non Irish Gypsys / Travellers were allowed to identify themselves.

Wonder why they chose to lose that demography

Why does it not say 'Black Irish and Yellow Irish' for consistency?

I got a leaflet through my letter box today saying she will be calling to mine on Wednesday. I actually like the idea of the census ever since I started tracing my family history :) I learnt so much and was able to find most of my family through it so I'm actually happy about it.

Yes they have their own language that is different from our own, including their own way of life and strongly identify with Catholicism when many in the wider Irish society is walking away from it, or are on paper only.
They act different and they are treated different. Maybe because they are different?

Irish Traveller also is not seen as a seperate ethnic group, although some have been lobbying for it. But they are seen as a group in itself, and is one of the 9 grounds for which you cannot discriminate in this country.
