Trek fx 7.3 sizing

I'm going to buy a trek fx 7.3 road/hybrid type bike, not necessarily the women's model. I'm female and am 169 cm (5' 6.5"). My inseam is 30/30.5".

I'm restricted to dealing with one bike shop and tried out the 20" frame there. I think i would need to be on the bike a good while to really know if it was comfortable or not. He didn't have the 17.5" (next size down) in stock so I couldn't compare.

Anyone have any experience of buying this range of bikes and sizing them. From what i've seen i would really need the 17.5" though I'm not sure because sizing seems to differ across brands and whether bike in question is a racer or hybrid. I also notice on trek's site that the ladies version of this doesn't even have a 20" - the biggest is 19".

    Any advice is appreciated.

How did you feel on the 20'' was it a bit of a stretch to reach the bars ? More importantly did you clear top tube when standing over bike ?

I went a little way outside cycling... I thought perhaps it was a bit of a stretch to reach the handlebars, though I'd need to go back and check that again as I wasn't paying a massive amount of attention to that.

There wasn't much clearance when I was standing over it. It does have a sloping top tube.

The guy thought it looked like it suited me but I'm not fully convinced, given that he didn't see me on a smaller bike and the trek website doesn't suggest at all that that size should fit me.

I'd be inclined to wait and try out both sizes. Its a big investment and you want to get it right, its your money after all.
Sometimes shops can tell you whatever bike they have in stock is fine for you if its close enough - for obvious reasons :)

If you're definitely going to buy one of the sizes, and from that shop, ask them to get in the smaller size.
