Camino de Santiago

I have recently completed the famous Camino de Santiago ( The Way of St. James ) which is a long distance walking route accross Spain that follows an ancient pilgrim's trail. The final destination for pilgrims is the city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

There are many routes to Santiago, but the most popular and the one with the best infrastructure is the Camino Frances ( The French Way ), which is 500 miles or 800 kms long. The Camino Frances starts in St. Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees.

Pilgrims stay in special hostels that charge between €3 and €10 per night for a dormitory bed. Local restaurants serve a special pilgrim's dinner for between €9 and €11.

It is a great way to see the ' real Spain ' and to meet interesting people along the way. For me, it was the greatest travel experience of my life time. It is something that people can do on a limited budget and one does not need to be super fit.
