I don't know if this is the correct forum for this.
I've an old eircom landline through perlico and I'm ex-dir so
that means caller id is off.
I need to switch it back on periodically to call
a friend in germany whose landline won't allow calls from
    unknown numbers.
Is there an easy fix for this or do I have to contact
    my line provider each time?
And incidentally who would I have to contact for
    this? Eircom or Perlico?

    Hi Zebedee

If your ex directory, this means your number cannot be given out by directory enquiries, thats all.

Caller Id is a network service and is enabled\disabled in the exchange

If your LINE Rental is with perlico (NOW Vodafone), then you will have to ring them, who in turn ring eircom to enable caller ID for Outbound calls.

If your line rental is with Eircom you can ring them direct.

once it is turned on in the exchange, you can dial the feature code to
turn it off when you are making particular call.

you will find this in the first few pages of the phone book.

    From the Eircom.ie Website

    eircom caller display

    * Once activated, caller display operates automatically.*

Turning it on / Turning it off

    * Do not wish your number to be displayed when calling another person, simply dial 141 before the number you are calling.

If your number is ex-directory or unlisted and you wish your number to be displayed when making a call, dial 142 before the number you are calling.

Ring whoever your line rental is with e.g. Eircom, Vodafone, Perilco etc etc..

Tell them what you want the default state to be i.e. do you want to normally display your Caller ID or normally block it?

    There are manual override prefixes:

To force your caller ID to be hidden : prefix with 141
To force your caller ID to be displayed : prefix with 142

So, for example if your caller ID is normally hidden but say your granny won't answer anonymous calls. You can prefix with 142 and send the caller ID for that call only.

    You've a few choices btw:

    1) Ex-directory (not listed in any phonebook / 118XX service)
    2) Ex-directory (not listed in phonebook but listed on 118XX)
    3) Listed

You can be unlisted, but still have caller ID sending switched on.

    Cheers for that. What's 118xx?

It's Directory Enquiries i.e. 11811 or 11850...there might be some others I'm not familiar with think 11890 is another one.
