Electric gates keep tripping particularly when there is rain. This may be caused I suppose if the wire is exposed.

Is it possible to identify where the cable is exposed or would all the cable have to be dug up

When you say tripping, do you mean they keep opening or they are tripping the power off?

This could be anything from a cable fault, earth fault, bad circuit board or motor, water ingress etc.
Your best bet is to get the installer back or ask an electrician

With the power off disconnect the power from the gate controller.
Reset the power and see if it trips again. If it does its the cable. If it doesn't its the controller or its power supply.
