    Are you legally meant to have one? Or is it just if one of the parties wants one?

    yes you need to supply tenants with a lease or if your a tenant ask for one it covers both tenants and LL's responsibilities and hopefully at the end of the tenancy it wont be a messy break up :)

    You don't need a lease. Check this page from the Citizens Advice website about different types of tenancy. The first one 'periodic tenancy' is what you have without a lease. The basic rights of landlord and tenant still apply, see this page

    It's more of a reassurance.

    If something bad happened, the lease would quickly be shown to be worthless.
