Hard drive diagnostic test - acer

I have an ACER 5735 which I got in May '09. For the last 2 months or so I've been getting a BSOD frequently. I'm not very computer savvy but the three possible problems that I keep hearing about are:

    a) some software problems - I unistalled a lot of the software this weekend
    b) Vista
    c) Hard Drive failing

Another friend of mine suggested that it could be to do with Acer as he had an Acer laptop that crashed and died before.

So, I've uninstalled a lot of software which could be causing problems. I talked to our tech support people at work who told me they could run a diagnostic test on the hard drive to see if it's about to crash but they'll charge me €49. Does anyone know of a test I could run myself to diagnose any possible problems?

Great little program called spinrite. that's what you are getting charged 49 euro for. It's about 90 quid to buy. maybe you know someone that has it that could lend it to you.
I would back up my stuff and do a complete reformat without any of the bloat ware that the manufacturers send out with the computers.

This checks your computer for dump files (All that crap on the blue screen) and can tell you what it means.
This will test your hard drive.
    This will test your ram.

If a re-install is an option for you. Do it.

Thanks so much both of you. I'm waiting for a new charger to be delivered tomorrow or Wed so will try those out then.
