My daughter was with me when I took my other child to the dentist. The dentist seen my daughters teeth , just while she was in the room and asked could she have a look.I said yes ,of course.Anyway , my daughters teeth are in bits. She has sensory problems and wont touch them, she wont eat hard food etc.The dentist has said she needs two teeth removed and because of her eplispsy they are going to have to send her to Crumlin.I rang my daughters normal dentist and left a message .Im going to talk with him tomorrow to see if he thinks he can remove them under local.Shes only 8.I hate the idea of a general anistetic, but the stress caused to her of a local might be too much.Any tips/advice/words of reassurance?

If she is potentially cooperative then maybe a specialist children's dentist may be able to do the treatment under local, however in some cases its best to get the work under GA once and then work on the future prevention +++++++.

I used to do G.A's in Crumlin as a dentist in a very limited way as a registrar about 6 years ago and the team there are excellent, and the dental team are top class. There is risks with any surgical procedure but sometimes there just is no other choice.

Discuss with your dentist but you need to weigh up the stress of the extraction under local vs. GA

May be better in long run to get everything done under GA in 1 visit and follow up with prevention, keeping things healthy with regular visits to your dentist after that

    Hi there,
I kind of had the same problem when I was younger. I have epilepsy but I only got diagnosed with it a couple years back (when I was 23). So when I was younger they didn't know what was wrong. While I was getting a filling with local I ended up having a real bad seizure and they had to stop. So I was sent for a GA instead. It went well and because at the time they thought I was allergic to local it made me take extra care of my teeth so that I wouldnt need anymore fillings and I didn't.

4 years ago I had braces fitted and I needed to get a tooth out and my dentist said he'd try it with local first, it took a lot longer than a normal person, he kept having to stop to adjust the chair down so the blood flow would go to my head, I kept feeling like I was going to lose consciousnes. After over an hour he had it out. It was a relief to me as I've already had 8 GA's in my life so I was glad not to have another one.

I would recommend trying to do it with local but it would depend on the dentist and your daughter. She is very young and I have to say even though I managed without GA, it was very hard on me and to be honest I got very panicky and I was an adult. It will be hard on you too, I brought my mam with me to my appointment and she sat there holding my hand to reassure me, she was a wreck when we got out. The dentist too has to be very patient too.

There are good and bad points to both so you'll have to weigh them up. And as I proved getting a GA as a child might be better and when she's older she might to able to handle the local better.

Thanks, Im going to se how long the wating list is for the GA, she would need 3 teeth out.The two extra and 1 thats loose.
It would be soooo much easier than a local, Ill keep you posted, thanks a million, cathy
