My husband, myself and our 7 yr old are thinking of going to Majorca in May, we have usually holidayed in the South of Spain around Puerto Banus but want a bit of a change. We were looking for maybe a nice beach, a good selection of restaurants, nice evening atmosphere, somewhere nice to walk around, safe...not a crazy party place but not somewhere too quiet either, nice beach or decent hotel with pool, good ladies shopping nearby - absolutely vital, was thinking of Palma - could anyone give us some advice about the general area or any specific places in Palma? Many thanks!

Mallorca is where the German package tourist hordes go. So be careful... if it is not 24/7 binge drinking you are after, Palma is most likely a place to avoid like the plague.

I went to Palma last year for a couple of weeks and really enjoyed it - I'm not a fan of package holidays and booked my own flights and accommodation. It's the islands main city so it doesn't have the same sort of atmosphere as Magaluf or Santa Ponsa - there is a beachfront strip which has some clubs and bars along it but that doesn't pervade the whole city. We rented a private apartment with a pool across from the marina and could easily get a bus to decent beaches nearby.

The old town of Palma is a great place to wander around and there are plenty of shops and restaurants. There are some nearby towns that are worth visiting, such as Soller, which are easily accessed by rail. It's safe to walk around at night - the old town has lots of restaurants and a good night-time atmosphere.

As I said, I'm not a fan of package holidays/holiday resorts at all but it's quite easy to avoid all that and have a great holiday.

We went to Majorca two years ago in May, very wet my friend, 2/3 days of the holiday you could not step outside, the other days were fine but a bit too early into their summer from our experience.

I think the rule of thumb is to head north coast or west coast.

Thanks a mil for all those replies, they really helped, I don't think Palma sounds like a place I would like to stay for a week, I must say i'm glad I asked now ...!:D

Bangra Bangra: We went to Mallorca for 10 days last year. Booked flights with Aer Lingus (got a great deal by booking before Christmas).
Like one of the previous posters I am also not a fan of package holidays.

We spent 1 week in Port Soller (North West of Mallorca)and 3 days in Palma. We rented a cottage in the hills about a 15 min walk to the town from this website. they have rentals for most budgets.

The location of the town is stunning!!!! It has a lovely laid back buzz about the place. Loads of beautiful walks in the area and you can catch the old tram from the seafront to the next town of Soller (takes 15 mins).

From Soller I would really recommend getting the old train through the mountains to Palma. A 7 year old would just love it!!!!!

Palma is only 30 minutes on the bus from Port Soller (bus fares dirt cheap)and this is the place to do the shopping. There are also some lovely shops in Soller and a handful in Port Soller.

Loads to see in the area.
You are welcome to send us a PM if you want any other info
