Early to mid 40's, was the 136bhp model tho.

I'd be amazed if you couldn't get 50mpg from that on a run on national roads, not likely on the motorway though. Love the username btw OP :)

I was getting 48MPG from mine on regional roads, getting about 46/47 at the moment on 18s.

I would say 50MPG is quite achievable on N roads at a steady 60 mph.

    (04 150bhp model)

    Also ran with 18's.

50MPG, I find this hard to believe for the size of the engine, what would I be looking at realistically, 40, 45?

What do you mean the size of the engine though? Its only a 2.0L diesel?

Yup, I'd say its because yours was the pre-facelift, think the 150bhp one is a bit lighter on the juice.

OP that actually looks like a good buy, new turbo and injectors means that expensive stuff has been done and should be good for a long time yet.

Its a bit pricey though (even though I'd love if they were selling for that ;) )

car not designed for those low profile tyres would probably ruin it on rough roads

Sorry chief, the car is designed to run on low profile tyres.

I have original BMW M Sport low profile 18s on mine which could be specced from new.

I've done 20k miles with them on now and have had no problems. If you don't drive like a clown you won't have any issues.

fair enough, but i find standard suspension on bmws fairly hard and would really worry about hitting a pothole hard with those wheels, but on second thoughts mine has the runflats which are dam hard without being low profile

Having just read this thread, I feel I shouldn't even bother looking at this model :(

You will find that people don't go on the internet saying how great their cars are, only when they have problems.

I'll bet if you google "X car problem" and you will find tonnes of stuff for any make.

The fact is that the main problem with the car your looking at is turbos blowing and swirl flaps.

The fact that the turbo has been replaced (assuming new turbo breather also, which was the cause of the problems) would lead me to believe that your main worry would be alleviated.

All you need to do if you buy it is get some blanks for the mainfold and the flaps removed.

BTW, turbos can go on any car, its not just common to BMWs of that era.

My car has 90K on it now and I am very happy with it.

    Very true Paul, thanks.

Also, this guy seems to know what he is talking about: http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?47586-BMW-320d-150Bhp-Turbo-Problems&p=1893548&viewfull=1#post1893548

i have an Auto E46 facelift 320d (150bhp) and on a motorway journey i will get 55mpg no problem travelling at the speed limit.

recent trip to Newry from M50 yielded 54mpg (reset it before i left).

my other halves Manual E90 which is remapped will do 50-55 giver or take on a motorway journey, most recent was a trip to kildar from north dublin and it reurned 53mpg.

my long term average in my E46 which includes driving Finglas to City Centre everyday for work and normal use at weekends is 37mpg.

Averaging 51.5MPG for the last few weeks with a few long trips when looking at the display
BUT do a quick calculation after doing a fill and you'll realise the display is a lying bast'd. Take about 10% off this for real MPG.

No complaints about it's real world efficiency though.

BMW E46 318d 2.0 litre diesel gets 46MPG, on short runs. Over 50MPG on long runs is normal. A very economical engine.

Did they make an E46 318d? Thought the 2.0 diesels were all badged 320d.

Yep, they did, and it's 1995cc. (I have one!)

It's a 125BHP machine, basically a detuned version of the 320d. (There may be some other differences with injectors/turbo, etc,)

yeah before i bought it, the last owner let the turbo go to heaven :)
brand new turbo 3 months before i bought it.

but aslong as you know how to maintain the car as in, knowing that the breather filtyer needs to be replaced evry oil change or every 2nd oil change you will be grand. look into removing the swirl flaps as they can go too.

similar to the E90, different turbo, ECU and injectors.

Thats overkill I'd say, I got the vortex style one which is the plastic valve, and BMW recommend this is changed every 3rd oil change (every 6th for me ;)) so around every 45K miles.

I don't see how the plastic valve could clog up anyway but I'll change it regardless :)

If I had the old cotton type one I'd be changing it a lot more regularly alright!
