I have been looking at second hand BMW diesels. I have come across one where the car shows 318d on the boot but is registered as 2.0 litre on websites. Is this just a typo?

Are there any implications of the 318d with 150BHP??

Any advice/help on this is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    SD

    318 150bhp is probably 1995cc or therabouts

the 18 no longer means the cc

As above, the boot badge doesn't not directly relate to the engine size anymore.

318d is basically the same engine as the 320d, they are both 2.0L

as a matter of interest can anyone tell me what the difference is between a 318d and a 320 d i know they have exactly the same engine so is it electronically detuned and if a person bought a 318 could it be simply turned into a 320d by remapping

Think its a different ECU map and injectors. Could possibly have a bigger turbo on the 320 aswell.

Both engines have the same code in the E90(M47TU2).

Interestingly enough, my E46 is a M47TU also, so I wouldn't be surprised if the E90 has the same basic engine as the 320d released in 99, just modified with flap controls, injectors, turbo and ECU adjustments since.

there was a time when 316 meant 1600 318 meant 1800 and 320 meant 2000 in petrol 320 was 6 cylinder engine then went to 4 cylinder and 316,318,320 all used the same engine in different state of tune how they detuned, i dont know ,in fact i have asked that question on this thread as far as i know now the have a 1.6 engine from the one series in the 316 saloon again

    The 320i was a 2.2 in the E46 though ;)

I don't think its ment as an engine size indicator really.. other countries wouldn't be obsessed with that like us.

Its more of a designation of position in the model range.

The higher the boot number the higher the ego rating of the driver....:P

This can be proved by the amount of non M bmws with M badges glued on.

Think you got that backwards, usually the people that care about egos buy the bottom of the range ones!

Turbo issues were only on the 2002 - 2004 E46 model 320d. The E90 model 318d/320d didn't appear until 2005 which don't have similar issues. Turbos can blow on any make of car if they are not maintained properly.

Also A4s are far from being bombproof too.
