Just a word of warning up at 3 Rock today MTBing and up at the top trail the newest one to the right is littered with small boulders which obviously have been rolled onto the trail purposely as some sort of protest to us using up there....RIDE WITH CAUTION.

can i ask why people do this? how do people figure mtb's cause damage to the locale while walkers (which are always much higher in number might i add) dont. Really get sick of the stupidity of people at times

Probably not so much damage to trails as some riders buzzing walkers... Plus arent mtbs etc still against coillte rules in three rock? Or has that been lifted now?

    It's not the damage, it's this^^^

I used to hike quite a lot an d never had a problem with it unless they were on the WW, in which case I gave out to them.

I can just imagine this self righteous pr1ck in action.

Bit of courtesy all round, it's a shared resource.

+1 No one group has the "rights" to banish another group of people from using a public resource, a bit of respect all round would not go a-miss here..

I'd assume (if this is about the same place that it's been lifed: http://www.epicmtb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13701
Some idiot has been rolling huge boulders onto the new Coillte trails - be very careful up there!

This problem has been officially reporte to Coillte with the following response:

    Fergal,
Thanks for this notice. We will have someone out to the site ASAP to rectify.

The signage for the site is currently being maunfactured and I will have a date for installation shortly.

Can I please ask that you alert MTBers on the forums and also ask that MTBers are vigilant for anyone disturbing the trail works? While we will pursue anyone we can for criminal damage, which I regard this as being, there is no doubt that vilgilance by MTBers as legitimate users of the forest is the best prevention from further damage.

Also, please note that the byelaw for the property will change once the signage is erected, to designate the trails for MTB use.

I do note that there are issues of other users on the MTB trails. The new signage will clearly state that the MTB trails are for MTB use only and we will have numerous signs to this effect on the trails. While the MTB trails are not yet open, policing this is very difficult and I would appreciate that MTBers are made aware of the likely presence of other users currently.

    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Daithi.

Jesus! Anyone caught putting that on the trails should be charged with attempted murder.

What do you get from giving out to strangers? Most people I know would just say hello to eachother ....

It was years ago (98/99), i just remember hearing about it.

But yeah...totally malicious if it were to happen.

The 'walls' you can just hop over most of them TBH

the WW is a dedicated hiking trail which bikers, horses, scramblers etc are not allowed use and so they shouldn't be there. The last thing I need to deal with when out hiking with large groups of kids is groups of bikers screaming down the trails putting the kids in danger and forcing them to move out of their way.

That's why I give (gave) out to them!

Idiots bombing down any trails whether they be walking trails or dedicated mtb ones when there are people in the way should be given out to and told to slow down or wait till the trail is clear. However I'm not in agreement about having mtb's banned from trails, if people are not idiots everyone get get their exercise together.

well there are dedicated mtb trails, why shouldn't there be dedicated hiking trails? The WW (and many other trails) are a fantastic resource for getting people into the country side as they are accessible and safe and easy for novices and pros alike. I'm sure the mtb fraternity would be quick enough to give out about walkers in Ballinastoe etc.

Outside of those dedicated routes and areas I've no problems with bikers doing what they do, plenty of countryside for everyone to get on with everything they want to do.

Last time I hit a kid he bounced back up without a scratch. What is the harm? Forgive me if I doubt your hyperbole. People don't put children at risk in this way, not when walking dogs, running on footpaths, horse riding on trails, or mountain biking on the WW. Either your perception of risk is skewed, you're concocting non-sense or mountain bikers are uniquely irresponsible, thrill seeking adrenaline junkies ploughing up and down the least exciting trail running through Wicklow.

These new dedicated mtb trails will get walkers just as the WW gets bikers. The self righteous will stop to give out to each other while the rest of us just enjoy being outside, getting some exercise.

Plenty of room on the Wicklow Way for both walkers and bikes as long as both parties treat each other with respect! I ride it regularly as do many of my riding companions but would never "scream down the trails" (if there are walkers around) or expect kids, or anyone else, to get move out of the way ..... I look forward to be "given out" to by the Cookie Monster!

Whose job is it to undo this damage? Do interested groups ever head up to fix trails or is it left to Coilte?

I know some of the lads are clearing some of the more dangerous ones but Coilte need to know the extent of this problem and for that reason I think it should be monitored and cleared by them

If I'm free next time there's a clean up I'd be glad to help as I'm only down the road.
