    I thought it might be a good idea if people posted helpful tips and tricks for DIY work on your car. You know like little tricks of the trade and such.

    Somebody in another thread a few days ago said how much of a pain in the arse it is counting teeth on a timing belt to make sure its the correct belt........so a little tip that I always do everytime I do a belt is this:

    1.Turn both the old and new belts inside out.
    2.Put them beside one another with the teeth inter-locking and put a little tippex mark on both belts.
    3.Roll the belts around in a full circle until the tippex marks come around again.
    4.If the marks line up then the belts are the same and you can go ahead and replace the belt without worrying if you mis-counted!


    I was doing a belt yesterday on a '05 Audi A3 and i just filmed me doing this so its easier for you to understand (I'm terrible at explaining things!!:D)






    Also just as a side note: I was replacing the waterpump along with the belt. Before-hand there was no sign of a failing waterpump but its good practice to change it anyway while your in there. Here's why you should replace it.....

    The pump just fell apart in my hands as soon as I removed it. I'd say it was only a matter of days before it totally failed.
