Hello Im thinking of starting computer science this year and I dont live in Maynooth so I will need to be staying in or around the college for most of the day, possibly the library. Im wondering does anybody know if PCs around the campus have Java or any other computer langauges installed?

And also can the computer labs be used at any time during the day, even if there are classes taking place in some of them?

I think the software labs are open until 10pm and they all have JCreator and BlueJ installed so you can program til your hearts content.

Another suggestion would be to install the JDK and Eclipse / BlueJ on your own computer if you have one?

Along with actually useful tools like eclipse,
The CS department has about 4 software labs, Lab 1 and Lab 3 are off limits (Masters Students and Fourth Years at work)

Lab 2 and Lab 4 are for used for labs, but not all the time, you might be asked to leave if there's a big lab or a lab test about to start. Lab 1b is a small room with about 2 rows of old machines at present, not sure what they plan to do with it.

Other then that you will be busy with other stuff in first year, so you won't really give CS the full attention that it deserves, but its good to set yourself some tasks outside of the first year course to really get your head around the programming, if this is your first exposure to it.
