Help - I Can't play a .wmv file on Windows Media Player on Windows 7

    Hi,
I've created a Video, from a camcorder, on a computer where I've installed Windows XP. The file is a .wmv and it plays fine on the Windows Media Player installed on that computer. However the video won't play on the Windows Media Player of another computer where I've installed Windows 7. I'm surprised about this as I would expect the new version to play the same files as the old version and some more extra...

When I try to open the file, I get an error message saying that the Player doesn't support the Codec used to compress the file.
Anybody knows what Codec is Windows Media Player looking for and where can I get it?

Can any other player on the win 7 pc play the file?

I decided to reinstall the softw which came with the camc i didnnt want to because of the huge files etc but i did and i'd forgotten the disc because wmp was doing a great job.I rarely have a problem and it amazes me how they right themselves.I had vlc but the jargon ...I' m not that serious about it.OK now and thanks.. i wish the people in the industries would employ skilled writers for different types of people in various countries but they don't bother it seems.I 'VE complained to a number of them.Confusion is a big industry.

Actually, it doesn't. It seems to play only on the old computer.

I'll look for the cds that came with the camera and will install them on the new computer as Paddyandy suggest.
Doesn't codecs come from the camera rather than from the Player?

Id say vlc too. It could play a stone if you got it onto your computer!

If you download and manually compile the source code for mplayer, it statically compiles support for a massive variety of codecs through ffmpeg. Most places won't include a prebuilt version due to legalities, but this is a surefire way to play practically any file out there.

    wud agree on using vlc,
it plays almost anything and wont be annoying you the way windows media player does!

I too found it odd it wouldnt play .mp4's, but the same Media Player Classic in the K-Lite codec pack or VLC are handy alternatives.

Someone on another site was also saying his WMP11 would not play WMV files on XP

Is WMP11 really that bad?? (My favourite is WMP9) WMV is a DEFAULT FORMAT FOR WMP,always has been...... It should play this!!

See if this movie trailer plays for you,its embedded and WMV format :)

    read here:

on a side-note- just for experimental purposes, i imported an AVCHD ten minute file from my camcorder last night on a vanilla install of Windows 7 (no 3rd party codecs or packs) on my Advent 4211 NETBOOK, imported the file into Windows Live Movie Maker, took maybe half an hour for Windows to prepare (transcode) the file, then did a bit of editing and cleaning up the video, and then rendering took another half hour to save in *.WMV format, tested it then on my xbox 360 extender in Windows Media Center over wireless, no issues at all! :)

TL;DR? check have you any audio enhancements running in your sound card software. ;)

i only remembered this thread after being reminded of it last night...
