Straight Razor Set

So I've been using safety razors for about a year, want to try out a straight. Am I right in thinking eveything I need to get is the razor itself, a leather strop and a honing stone?

I've gotten all my gear from Shaving.ie and am very pleased with the service, and I will be getting the razor and strop there. However I was thinking of getting a Norton 4000/8000 combo waterstone which is out of stock on the website. Am I better off buying this seperately from another site (sorry Chris) or would I get away with a single 8000 grit stone and the leather strop?

    Cheers.

You don't really need the 4000/8000 stone if you don't plan on restoring some old straights or doing all of your own honing (you would generally have to finish the razor on a higher grit than 8000 anyway). You should be able to get away with just barbers hone to keep the edge sharp.

Now about where to get a barbers hone. I only have experience with one vendor about a barbers hone. I got my first straight, strop and barbers hone from Larry at www.whippeddog.com. He offers what you need to start straight shaving for pretty cheap prices.

Here are the barber hones http://www.whippeddog.com/
Barbers-Hones/ he offers and they start at $19 with international shipping. All prices on his site have shipping already included in the price.

If you have any doubt about just needing a barber hone, a member on Badger & Blade kept a straight razor shaving nicely with just a barbers hone for 28 years.

Here is a post from him http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2905358&postcount=14

Also here is a video of him shaving with a straight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIM0Coix6Gg

It can be useful to see other people shave and see if the way they hold the razor can help you.

Also there is no real point in buying an expensive strop when you are just starting out. You will likely put a nick in the strop so it's better to do it on a cheap strop than on an expensive strop. If you get a barbers hone from whippeddog I suggest you pick up the Poor Mans Strop Kit. It's not pretty but it's good to learn on and if you mess up the strop you haven't messed up something expensive. I would suggest you get the strop kit anyway.
