was thinking of investing  in a harrow as fields far too mossy and ground needs air and doesn't take a genius to see they can only improve. my question is chain harrow or pin harrow?..will only be for grassland improvement so probably chain be ok (but don't know)and does anybody knows where to get a reasonable priced one? checked done deal but they seem expensive enough.or does anybody has one in the yard they are willing to sell at good price;).. anyway any comment on harrowing grassland very welcome as i don't know much about it myself. Thanks. I am in Kildare

Go with a chain harrow much better job in my view, contact machinery dealers, you can buy with or with-out the frame, if your handy you can weld up a frame yourself.

    hi ya,
Just ordered a 10 foot harrow from johnsons in longford. I'm sure they would drop it up to kildare too as got mine for 600 incl vat and delivery and I'm about a half hour from longford. Really good make harrow, hackett and they just got in a load of them this week so deals to be done I'd say.:)

Bought a 10' off them last year aswel at €600 all in. Good harrow, hard to get a better one at that price

excuse me butting in, are these harrows trailed or mounted on the lift? also would the trailed ones be more flexible and work better on uneven grown. what about one of these home made one using car wheel rims http://www.caf.wvu.edu/~forage/library/pastimp/page28.htm would they help to clean up grassland

trailed like in that picture. They're cheaper without the frame. Couldn't say that they are better.

The wheels/tyres idea would be an excelent and cheap way to level out poaching marks, but wouldn't root out dead grass. Have it my head to make one of these at some stage from old lorry tyres.

For this reason it might be better to use this type of contraption during the grazing season. Save chain/grass harrow for back end/early spring

    Howya Guys

Just a quick question regarding chain harrows, there are two types of harrows available.
The most popular are the Hackett pin type but what are the other ones like.
I am considering purchasing one and have been offered a good price on the 1st type.

Also for those that have the non mounted drag type how do you transport them if no front loader is available

    Thanks for your replies

the hackett are a good harrow, however they are not meant for rough going as the the tines will open if they get caught in any thick vegetation, roots, or brambles, once they loose their temper all you can do is clamp each tine with a u shackle or turn the harrow the reverse direction thus loosing efficiency

Lads, the chain harrow ye got for EUR600 from johnstons. Had it a frame. Was it the trailed or mounted one. Seems very good value and i am on the lookout for one.
Also, quick question for ye. On poached ground - cattle have fairly roughed up a few of the paddocks - I was thinking of going with the roller to level and have the chain harrow on back of roller to re-aerate. Any opinions on that. Good or bad idea.

    Cheers

Twas a trailed version (hackett harrow). The chain mat part will be all rolled up when you get it (7' wide as it's rolled side to side. I thought they were selling me a smaller harrow first, but no :D). And there will be a separate 10' towing bar to connect the chain mat to.

You're talking around €1000-1200 for one with a frame.

The frame would be handy, but there's no real need for it either. You're only really going to be using it once every year in the spring. Good too if you are reseeding.

You can park the roller now if you buy the harrow. Perhaps still use it two runs around the silage ground headlands and maybe gapways if you want, but no advantage to using it on established grassland.

Good to get good grass seed to soil contact when reseeding
