My friend says that so long as it is in your golf bag it is your club. But isn't it a rule that you can't play with somebody's clubs? He uses his dad's driver and wedge. If you aren't allowed what is the punishment?

    €2 on the line............

Do you mean he brings his dad's two clubs in his bag and starts the round with them?

It doesn't matter who owns the clubs as long as you don't start with more than 14 clubs.

You can also add to the number of clubs you started with (max is still 14) and this is specified in the Rules.

stockdam that is interesting, I always thought that once you teed off on the first hole, whatever was in your bag is what you have to play with, I didnt think you could get someone to bring you out an additional club during the round when playing in competition.

This could make for an interesting round. Start off with just your driver in you bag, and have a friend carry all of your clubs. At each shot, decide whether you can use one of your existing clubs or whether you should add a new club to your bag.

Would essentially give you the option to choose from 20+ clubs and you would only carry a club that is going to be used. ;-)

Just going back to the original question. Does the op mean sharing clubs with another player?

You can only use a max of 14 clubs,

    4-4. Maximum of 14 Clubs

•a. Selection and Addition of Clubs
The player must not start a stipulated round with more than 14 clubs. He is limited to the clubs thus selected for that round, except that if he started with fewer than 14 clubs, he may add any number, provided his total number does not exceed 14.
The addition of a club or clubs must not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7) and the player must not add or borrow any club selected for play by any other person playing on the course.

Only if a club is broken accidently (not in anger) can you replace one of the 14 clubs.

4-3. Damaged Clubs: Repair and Replacement

    a. Damage in Normal Course of Play
If, during a stipulated round, a player’s club is damaged in the normal course of play, he may:
    • (i) use the club in its damaged state for the remainder of the stipulated round; or
    • (ii) without unduly delaying play, repair it or have it repaired; or
    • (iii) as an additional option available only if the club is unfit for play, replace the damaged club with any club. The replacement of a club must not unduly delay play and must not be made by borrowing any club selected for play by any other person playing on the course.

AFAIK its never ok to use someone elses club. Even if you are on the same team or partners. Not even for a tap in putt ;)

No I mean he lends his dad's clubs for the start of the round and then uses them. I thought they had to be your own for competitions.

No, of course not. They're yours for the round once they're in your bag at the start of it. Who actually owns them is completely irrelevant.
