    I did it to a billpay Desire recently. Its grand. Most of the guides will tell you to install Clockword Recovery, but AmonRA is designed for HTCs so consider that. Not sure what difference it makes on the DHD though. On my Desire, I can use the trackball to navigate the menus, instead of the volume buttons.
    Also, if you go the route of flashing a new rom, decide what stuff you want to keep and back it up with Titanium Backup, coz when installing a new ROM initially, you have to wipe everything or else it'll cause complications.

    Though i think your question is would meteor/o2/vodafone care if you do it? Not unless somehow you break it (and ask them to fix it), which is difficult enough to do. I "USB Bricked" mine the other day somehow, but was able to fix it with a few command line commands in windows, with the phone connected via USB.
