So, we all get nervous doing certain things. What's the most nervous you've ever been? Me? Probably doing my driving test actually.

job Interview... All I had in my head was that I had to move straight to Dublin if I didn't get it. I had done three interviews before then for Tesco, Dunnes and a call centre and failed them all so wasn't feeling to hot going into the big one. Got even more nervous when I sat down to three managers giving it.

Wouldnt have been the most neverous i ever was, but the first thing that came to mind was that 'butterflies in the stomach' feeling when youre waiting for the E to kick in

First time i went to Alton Towers, I was 10, in the queue for Oblivion ( a 180 foot vertical drop rollercoaster) i was brickin it, did the whole close the eyes routine, opened em for a second to see what was going on and they had us hanging over the edge, nearly had a heart-attack!!!...But now I FÚCKIN LOVE ROLLERCOASTERS :D

Asking someone out for the first time. Bricked it.
Asking her out fell apart into a muttering her being "cute and funny and stuff" and "if your not working or hanging out with your friends or doing anything this weekend"......jesus I was bad.....

Probably anything to do with public speaking. I remember giving a presentation when I was in school. Actually lost the ability to speak momentarily! After having to do lots of em for college, Ive seen become alot better and don't outwardly show the nerves, but I still hate doing it.

Going to first confession. The confessional box was unbelievably scary. I rattled off my sins, thinking 'at least the priest can't see me'. Finished off with the Act of Sorrow, then the priest decided to ask me how my parents were.

    So much for anonymity

Why do people do this ?

If you were paying a visit to the clap clinic would you be shouting it from the rooftops as well ?

because they are my family and they care about important milestones in our lives such as getting your first drivers license!

equally we tell them about communions/confirmations, exams, getting engaged, getting married, interviews, first day at work and pretty much the entire list above!

some moments when i felt genuinely scared:

std test results (i was fine)
first time I took ecstacy, the not knowing what was going to happen (i was More than fine :) )
and a strange one: going over to border into mexico (tijuana), just had a horrible feeling and panicked a bit- was right, absolute kip!

Doing my first night dive. Was ****t*ng myself. Am fearful in any kind of dark water, even just skinny dipping, in shallow water, at night. Was great in the end, well worth doing. Saw some incredible squid.
Oh and another marine related one. Snorkelling with whale sharks. They are f*cking HUGE! The visability was poor, so all of a sudden they just appear in front of you out of the murky water, like a double decker bus gliding by. Had major butterflies in my stomach as I sat waiting on the boat, waiting for a sighting. Snorkelling freaks me out a bit anyway. It was amazing though. Once in a lifetime stuff.

Tijuana is alright, once you get away from the strip (and the border) and go inland a little. Good food to be had. I got lucky and got talking to some guys in a shop on the strip... who sent me off to find their uncle... who brought me to a really nice little restaurant, with good food and good people.

I've been very nervous about quite a few things, but for me the biggest i can remember was giving a presentation in college. i was so bad I was shaking loads.

though I may be forcing myself to flirt with someone / ask for a phone number tonight, so that may top the presentation :o

I can't find a link at the moment, but I remember reading that some men's bodies go under more stress talking to a woman they fancy than when they're in combat situations in a warzone. Pretty crazy when you think about it :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,884 ✭✭✭Eve_Dublin

When I landed in Buenos Aires Argentina to begin year long travels alone on the continent. Sitting in the middle of the main street (9 De Julio....widest street in the world...terrifying) and cried. All I could think was, "What the f*** have I done!!".

Best year of my life though!

standing on a street in Pamplona with thousands of others waiting for the rockets to go off and the bulls to be released and then waiting until the bulls are near you...
First you see a few people running past you and then you feel the bulls on the ground up your legs, and bang, you're running. But the time between the rocket and feeling the bulls and knowing they are close enough that you have to run, mental nerves.

Probably the moment before I done Salvia. It was too late to pull out after I inhaled and I just thought to myself "Why the fcuk have I just done this".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 758 ✭✭✭whydoibother?

I went with communion/confirmation. Both times I was made to the main reading. Standing up to do that on your own in front of a packed church is scary stuff when you're 7 or 12. On the plus side, having been through it, nothing's truly scared me since.

yep pretty big thing. and the way women are known to react, it's understandable.

Throwing a grenade for the first time...hoping I didnt drop it before I got to throw it.

Iv been nervous on a few occasions on overseas service.

Catching my bits in my zip, when you cant pull the zip up or down. That makes me nervous.

Taking control of an airplane for the first time.

Running really fast downhill when you know you can stop without belting into a tree.

    Also, the first time. ;)

i had to do a reading in front of the whole school for mass a few years ago.. walked up sheeting bricks cause i hate any and every form of public speaking.. psyched myself out by looking at everyones face, then i started reading... only to realise half way through that i was reading the wrong reading, stopped and said fuck it realy quietly and read the proper one after.. the only thing was, everyone told me after that the mike kind of picked it up wen i said f**k it and everyone heard it... AWKWARD!!! :P

I always find the first day in a new job to be particularly nerve racking. I always forget everyone's names and I hate that feeling of not being sure what the hell you're meant to be doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,333 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

    Flying.

This always scares the crap out of me. I have come close to panic attacks on flights several times. This is rather out of character for me 'cause I'm normally an unbelievably relaxed person.

I was pretty nervous about living on my own for the first time and when I had my first day at school.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭Chaotic_Forces

Bit of a bump but I like this thread.

Anyway: for me it was asking a girl out. It wasn't even the fact she might say no or whatnot. It was "WTF am I meant to do/what way do I act?!".

Of course it was followed by a lovely "no, I'm sorry but" "so no as in... never, yeah?" "yeah, I'm sorry but I just don't like you like that", "ah well, could have been worse, at least I know what it's like to have been let down in a nice way".

That was followed by a hug and a kiss on the cheek and a lovely smile. :D
