Thinking of buying an N64?

    Here's the story;

I'm currently living in Canada and am sans gaming console, so I was thinking of buying an N64 to plug the hole.

Now my memories of owning one of these beauties is probably completely tainted by nostalgia and the fun times I had as a kid playing it.

So my question to you guys, does the N64 still hold up well? I know Goldeneye has aged horribly, but I'm thinking more along the lines of the Zelda's (last time I played OoT was on the GC, and MM was on the N64), Smash Bros, Mario Kart etc.?

Also how much should I expect to pay for one? Have they become collectible?

Since you're in Canada, so I assume buying an NTSC N64, you should pick one up pretty cheap. But yea, personally the N64 doesn't hold up well in the graphics dept, but good in gameplay. Grab a Gamecube methinks..

I suppose the more looking around you do, maybe you can find a seller near you pick up to save on postage.

Oh, and keep an eye out for any Atari games in thrift stores/yard sales for me! :pac:

Worth it for Ocarina of Time alone...but yeah, prepare yourself to be horrified at some of the more rose tinted titles.

The n64 indeed has not aged too well, as other people have said. I think Jet Force Gemini was a gem of a game on it and still stands up well today.
Smash brothers is really good on the gc,Mario Karts not too bad but I still prefer the snes version.
I think you would be better picking up a cube and the zelda collectors edition, your two n64 zeldas are on that amongst others. this way you could also pick up windwaker, four swords and twilight princess. Then you need a gameboy player for the cube for the minish cap and link to the past, problem solved.:)

You could do what Retr0 may suggest and play games on a PS but with a plastic bag over your head coated in a film of vaseline, to create the authentic visuals... ;)

...just remember the air holes , we've lost too many A&R members that way.
the N64 post of Doom is fairly unique and kind of overlooked , if you get an n64 its well worth the punt

Hmm I might swing towards a Gamecube then. My flatmate wants smash bros and I'm only really interested in the Zelda games.

although the prices for said games on eBay

The reason I thought of the N64 is it's the only games console I can remember playing with friends and having loads of fun in 4 player.

Definitely the Gamecube, Smash Bros on it is great, and if you can lay your hands on the bonus collectors disk of Zelda you'll get both the N64 games remastered as well, and very good they are too!

Go for a Gamecube if you want 4 player games.

You have Mario Kart double dash, better than mario 64.

Timesplitters 2 which is a much better version of goldeneye.

Smash Bros Melee is better than smash bros.

And you've plenty of other great 4 player games.

Personally I would have said Doom on the N64 as a reason to stay away..so so bad imo
