Getting an iPad 2 from the USA

So, I was looking at the pricing of the iPad 2, and figured that getting one sent through a parcel forwarding service would be much MUCH cheaper then buying one here in Ireland on the 25th. Does anybody have any experience with any parcel-forwarding services?

Also, if I were to get a smart case and camera connecter to go with it, would these ship separately, resulting in being charged out of the nose for shipping and admin costs at the parcel forwarding service? Also, what is the likelyhood of me being stung for VAT? If I would be hit, there is no point in doing this, as that would basically bring the prices to the same level.

I would highly advise against this. If it was so easy, why isn't everyone doing this?

Didn't even know parcel forwarding places existed after 9/11.

Agree with all of the above. Also, iPad 2 delivery date is now 2-3 weeks in the States.

duty of 14% Then delivery and handling charges. Then vat of 21% on the final price. To the poster that said customs would **** him over. No they won't they will just do their job. And charge the appriopate charges.

Duty rate of 14%?? Holy cow, I didn't think it would be that high.

14% duty then the 21% VAT.... Those charges or being ****ed by customs = Same outcome

Yeah the rate is quite high for electrical goods. It's 2.7 for sporting goods and can be zero for energy saving devices.

I use nybox.com all the time and never get stung by customs. Its fast and reliable. However theres no point in doing it for the ipad 2 it wont be all that cheaper after delivery charge and it out in ireland at the end of the month anyway.

Plus some people are already reporting issues with ipad 2:

Between 400-500k iPad 2's were allege to be sold on the first day. You are bout to get a few people complaining of issues once totalled these would be less than a 1000

Bound to be one or two go wrong out of millions. Sure the yellow glue got a headline but everyone knows it fades and it's just Apple factory to shelf quickness that causes it.

Yes i suppose your right. Still no point buying from u.s. Let the yanks get it and find out if there are any bugs with it then buy it here at the end of the month if all is ok.

Morality and customs aside, If you were to bring a wifi only iPad2 home from the US, operationally there would be no issues over here, right?

    Interesting.
Do they write 'gift' on the slip?
Roughly how much overall to ship say a 3lb laptop package?

I had a mate ship me a 3lb netbook package. It cost him 50dollars with usps.
He wrote 'gift' on it so no customs charge, but he held on to the box and documents. I'd rather have those for resale.
    Cheers.

I red the light bleeding issue and they mentioned that it also happens in the iPad 1. I was on Grafton st today and spend a couple of minutes experimenting with a black screen on iPad trying to see if it bled, and for my eyes it had no issues.

I also asked one of the guys there if they would take pre orders or if he knew at what time of the 25th they will start selling it, and he said that no preorders, and not time. Whenever they have them, they will sale them.

Another interesting thing was that we really doubted they would have them on the 25th as Ireland is one of the last countries to receive them in Europe and it could take up to 1 week longer. Will see, time will tell...

You're generally better off asking your dog for insider apple information than your average store employee.

If I was to visit the states next month would there be any issues buying the iPad 2 and bringing it home with me? Could I get done at customs?

Excuse my ignorance if this is an obvious question but I've never been there before.

You're allowed a TOTAL of €430 to bring back with you, anything more than that, you pay Duty and VAT on the whole lot. If you're only getting the cheapest iPad, you should be under the limit. Look up Revenue.ie for further details.
