    Hi guys,

    Can anyone recommend me a network hard drive?

    Requirements are basically just so I can access it from home and from work, as well as give others, ie clients, access to all/parts of it too.

    Thanks.

    You really need to provide a budget, there's a huge range and they vary hugely in price depending on how hany hard drive bays they have and the components they use (which will affect the performance (i.e transfer speeds). Have a look at the NAS performance reviews on small net builder. If you want a basic two-bay NAS so you can use RAID 1, I'd recommend the d-link dns323 (€100-200 I think, +drives). You can set up the ftp server for sharing and specify different users and groups to restrict access.

    I bought one of these recently, after recommendations from some friends. I must say, it's great. Plenty of features and reliable. I installed 4x2TB drives in it, so I've almost 6TB of space to use.

    Well actually budget would be under a grand, for everything in total. So enclosure + drive(s).

    Is there anything special that needs to be done on the router? Like how is the IP address of the server accessible from outside? i just realised I dont actually know how these things work, in practical terms.

    Does it go:
    Wall -> NAS -> internal router -> PC/laptop
    or
    Wall -> internal router -> PC/Laptop/NAS
    ?

    I ask because if its the 2nd, then I'd imagine I'll need to configure my router, or add the NAS IP to my DMZ?

    I bought one of these a few weeks ago. It's fine, and it's accessible from inside & outside the firewall. Dabs were offering a bundle with 2 x 2TB drives for under €250, so that's well inside your budget.

    BTW the connection is [outside]->[router]->[anything inside including the NAS], with the NAS being made visible by registering it in the router's DMZ. Make sure you have strong passwords if you're going to expose it.

    the new firmware on the DNS320 allows for 3TB drives.

    I have both the ReadyNas Duo and the DNS320, the DNS320 is a lot faster and the torrent app works better IMHO. However you can add ram to the ReadyNas, I never got round to it.
    I only use the 320 now as it uses a lot less juice, the ReadyNAS is really back up to the back up.

    (plus the new firmware allows for cloud back up to some Amazon service that I know nothing about)

    Support is better for the ReadyNAS - way better.
