    Scenario:

Current job is potentially wrapping up in 4-6 months.
Ive done a number of interviews, one for a small/medium sized company last week.

Job is in IT, im the first hire of supposed 3-4 more to come. Mainly database role but job spec specifies a LOT of other items.

Job would be a challenge but not out of my area of expertise.

Done an interview today for a 2nd job, in my current company.
Job again is in IT, but in an area im totally unfamiliar with. Interview went well, il know if i got through to the next round by monday, with 3 more rounds to go.

    Issue:
First job for small company got back to me and offered me the position. Problem is i want 2nd job. If i had my choice Id take the 2nd one straight away.

I have to give an answer by monday. Il know if i got through to the 2nd round by monday for the other job also. If i dont get through, its a no brainer.

If i do get through im in a pickle as i can take a job im not totally excited about vs hanging on in the hope that i get the 2nd job.

I believe there are a number of candidates in for the 2nd job, with more experience in the field than I have, but I also know my first interview went well.

I know this is my decision to make, but what would you do and why?

I know this is my decision to make, but what would you do and why?

If I was you, I would be talking with my current manager / head of department and see how they rate you.

Surely if they rate you highly and their is still recruitment ongoing in your current company they could see a way to relocate you when your current position comes to an end.

To be honest though I would have taken this step prior to proceeding outside interviews but hindsight is a great thing as they say.

Are you single and mortgage free or do you have a family?

If you have a family and your at risk of redundancy I would say take the job that's guarenteed!

If you single and carefree and can take a punt on the second job or getting relocated somewhere else in your current company and that's where you heart is I would say stay there but if it doesn't work out what is your back up plan?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush - a very old cliche but one that holds so very true in this recessionary employment market.

The other thing to consider - if your new company is small now - what is their potential for growth / expansion? - if there is potential there then you can grow with the company too. Often being in a large mutlinational (I'm presuming here) can be very comfortable, good salary, benefits, regular working hrs but often the scope to grow your career can be limited and even if you do you are still beholding to directors / managers in another country.

Can't make the decision for you but the above should maybe help you think about your choices - good luck with whatever you do!
