he needs to apply for invalidity pension immediately
    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/IllnessDisabilityAndCaring/PeoplewithDisabilities/InvalidityPension/Pages/ip.aspx

there is a waiting time of in excess of 3 months as a result of changes in procedure, so act immediately.do you yourself work less than 15 hours a week? if so you might be entitled to 1/2 rate carers allowance
    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/IllnessDisabilityAndCaring/Carers/CarersAllowance/Pages/ca.aspx
there is a 6 month backlog for carers so please apply immediately. if you are awarded either or both of these payments you may then be entitled to HBP
    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/HouseholdBenefits/Pages/hb.aspx
this is a lot of form filling. please go to your local citizens information centre and ask for help.best of luck

mrsbyrne has suggested that you apply for invalidity pension which is a much better deal than allowance (provided you have enough stamps).Be careful that you apply for the right payment.

Thanks mp22. We werent aware of a difference! I suppose its back to square one now with the form filling.
Can I ask,do you know how either payment would be decided?

EDIT: What I mean is..does the department tell you which one to apply for? How can he be sure hes applying for the correct benefit?

chucken this is important. SW have 4 different types of payments for people who are sick or disabled. if you husband is getting illness benefit now then the next step is invalidity pension. invalidity payment is more than illness benefit. you will not have to send in doctors certs. you will get free travel, free electricity units, a free landline or 25 euro per month phone credit, and a free tv licence.the citizens information centre nearest to you will probably help you to fill in the form. you need to do this as soon as possible as there is a long delay in invalidity pension being processed and you are losing out on your potential entitlement every day you waste. the doctor does not need to give any further information at this stage, but a supporting letter from him would not do any harm either.no, the department will not tell you which payment to apply for. invalidity pension is the correct benefit to apply for at this stage.

    apply for carers allowance immediately.

fill your own details and hubbys asap and drop it into hubbys GP for him/her to complete.. SW are currently only backdating payment to the date application is received, so every day that passes you are losing out on your entitlement. Carers are currently dealing with a 7 month backlog.:(:(:(

OP here! I just wanted to keep you up to speed on whats happening.
Well we got both forms filled out and within 5 days hubby got a text to say his claim is being processed. He now has an appointment with the SW doctor on April 14th. So at least things are moving along. Either way,we will be out of no mans land! :)

OP here again. Well we seem to be back to square 1 here. Hubby got a letter last Thursday saying he's now not entitled to ILLNESS BENEFIT and got no money on Friday. The letter said to sign on for Jobseekers and go to the CWO in the meantime. If he signs on it means he's supposed to be looking for work, when in fact he cant go back to his previous job. He didnt hear anything about the application for Invalidity Pension. We're totally confused.

EDIT..The meeting with the SW doctor took all of 4 minutes. How a decision came from that is beyond me.

I feel for you! Took me 18 months from applying for Disability Allowance, being turned down, and appealing and losing the appeal. These magical people reviewed the medical evidence, however my consultant and GP were never contacted!!!
