HP G5000 I have no history with this. It just landed on my desk today. Battery charges, lights come on when power button is pressed ( No hdd light) fan spins, Nothing on screen at any time (no post) fan stops, power light and battery charge lights stay on. hard drive keeps spinning although i cant hear heads reading. Swapped out memory and HD - no joy; Bin or dig deeper?

Do you get any error beeps when it starts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭danger_mouse_tm

No beeps at all. Just fan on then imediatly fan off.

Smells like that feckin' GPU problem again. Basically, if this is the case, the gpu chip wasn't soldered correctly to the motherboard. Which means either you solder it properly, or buy a repaired motherboard for it. It's very common with the DV4000/DV6000/DV9000's also.

Sounds like a problem I had with a HP desktop and it turns out it was the graphics card was bust and needed replacing.

I knew there was a problem with the dv6000 series. I wasn't aware it affected these ones. I will look very briefly into what's involved in maybe soldering it. I know there are none of these boards to be got on eBay. Thanks for the help on this guys

try pressing across the top ,where the volume controls led is, ,near the power button, to ,press gently to the right, right to the left, a few inchs ,back and forth for 3 seconds, that how my friends hp comes on .Theres a known problem with the hp power cable,\
ie it may be nothing to do with the grahics card.his hp6000 works fine, apart from power button glitch.press about 5 inchs back and forth, on the top panel, start near the power button.it takes 5 seconds to respond.
i heard about this trick on youtube .

There's also a fix that worked a while ago for me:

    1. Take out battery
    2. Disconnect power cable
    3. Hold down power button for 60 seconds
    4. Without letting go of power button, plug in power cable

Apparantly its got something to do with static

tired all those things guys. Still nothing on the screen. The fan spins up and imediately shuts down. I am trying to take it apart now but it doesn't open up like a toshiba. I have pulled all the screws from the bottom and release the ram dvd drive and battery. can't seperate any more of it without doing damage.

He makes it look so easy in the video. The laptop is very unlike the G5000 that i am trying to take apart. However the section at 2:32 where he takes apart the piece above the keyboard is just not happening for me and it does honestly feel that if i apply any more pressure it's just going to snap. I don't think it's worth wrecking because it's not mine - it belongs to a friend, plus i think that if it is a faulty board the cost of the board will be more than a better laptop would be on adverts. What do you think?

You shouldn't need to use force. If there is a part stuck, there is a screw to be taken out. You might be able to repair the board, so its worth a go :P Trust me, I was sh*tting myself when I took a blow torch to the motherboard on my laptop, but it all worked out :D

at least it was your own laptop. Theres half a gig of ram been driven by a cerleron M. with the 80 gig drive she weighs in at nearly 3 kilos. Could we be bothered? it's annoying when it can't be fixed - i reckon it will be on adverts by tuesday

I guess you have a point. I didn't realise it was that old, there is a new G5000 out and I've mistaken it for that I'd say. Yep, I'd sell it if you can

From my experience - that method is only temporary - I did it few times, helps for month, maybe 2 (depends on temperature conditions you use laptop). For my own HP TX1000 I even did it simpler than on the movie. I just did disconnect laptop fan, put it upside-down and cover with pillows to help it to get really hot (and temporary repair that fatal soldering).

If you want to really repair it you need to find someone to reball GPU:

or, alternatively buy new chip and replace old one (not sure if now it is still on market)

Thanks for the info on that. The only guy i know that can do a reball is in roscommon but the laptop isn't worth doing anyway.

If you have a heatgun handy it might be worth giving that reflow trick a try. I did a dv6000 a few months ago and also put in a copper shim on the gpu to improve cooling. Still going strong!

Tbh though I doubt it's the same gpu issue as the dv series. Probably is related to crappy heatsink design and overheating though knowing HP. Hardly worth trying to repair it with the specs you mentioned anyway. Advise person to buy something other than another damn HP.

I don't mind having a go at it. I will call the owner tomorrow and put it in such a way that his laptop is no good as it is and ask him if he is prepared to take a chance at me (or someone that can be trusted with a heatgun!) having a go at it.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago with the DV6000 (Special Edition :D).
Screen went black but everything else seemed to work after two days of trying the screen turned on so i downloaded updates for the graphics card and it seems to work fine. The noise coming from the back of it is my lasted worry but she's 3 years old and owes me nothing

No mine is white and grey but i think there the same spec. I upgraded to win 7 last xmas which was a big improvement and had to get a new charger (could fry a rasher it got so hot) but other than that very little problems apart from the black screen of course.
