I'm living in Dundrum and looking for a check list of things i need to do in order to get a licence, etc.
As it stands, I don't drive or hold a licence. Can someone give me a list of things i need to do to get the ball rolling - like eye test, number of lessons i need to do before the test? Do i do the theory test before/after I do the driving lessons? when should I apply for the licence, etc/

    Tks

www.rsa.ie should probably be your first port of call Emer. You should then acquire a copy of "Rules of the Road" (published by the RSA).

By the time you read / study the above book you should have a clear understanding of what to do next.

Welcome to Boards by the way. Looks like the new search function is kinda workin' :D

There's a Learning to Drive forum, that may be more suitable.

You apply to do your Theory Test.
You study for the Theory Test, preferably using the CD or book.
Upon passing the theory test, you fill out your application for your Learner Permit (this is what a Provisional Licence is now called), with the €15 application fee, a completed eyesight report (tell an optician that you want an eyesight check for applying for your driving licence, it cost me €10), your certificate of passing the theory test, and 2 passport photos, signed at the back.

You receive your Learner Permit about a week later (it's valid for 2 years). After receiving this, you can start to take lessons. If you wish to drive your own car, or drive somebody else's car, you need to be insured, the car needs to be taxed, and you need to be accompanied AT ALL TIMES (this is very important!) by someone who has held their full licence for 2 or more years, as well as displaying front and rear L Plates. You do not need to have insurance to do lessons, as the instructor's insurance will cover you.

Whenever you feel ready, you apply for your driving test, sit it, and upon passing, you fill out the application for your full licence (cost is €25 but it lasts for 10 years!), accompanied by 2 passport photos!

That's all to it, I think! Also, you cannot sit your test until 6 months after getting your Learner Permit (although you can apply for your test before 6 months is up)

Edit: I should mention that if you get your Learner Permit after April 4th, you need to do 12 lessons before sitting your test.
