Photo ID on arrival from UK

Whenever I go to London I use my work id card going through passport control in Cork (on the return leg - never anybody in the UK). If flying with Aer Lingus its also an acceptable form of ID on Ireland <> UK flights.

Last night the guy in Cork passport control gave me grief about using my work id as he said it wasn't acceptable and didn't show my nationality.. It's a photo ID from a reputable employer.

Per citizensinformation.ie a work id card with photo is one of the acceptable forms of id used when travelling within the Common Travel Area (Irl<>UK) so I'm curious to know if anyone else has been pulled up or whether I was just unfortunate to meet some grumpy guy.

Yes, as an Irish citizen arriving from another Common Travel Area country you are not required to produce a passport.

Irish immigration is a joke. We stay out of Schengen because we are part of the CTA with Britain yet then we refuse to implement the CTA. You will note when you arrive into the UK from Ireland you bypass Passport control entirely and go through a separate channel where you show your boarding pass and then you're straight into baggage reclaim - no such luck at Irish airports.

The CTA is a funny beast alright. I hold a UK passport but I have a Polish name and a German accent and German driving license. By the letter of the law, I am not required to have a passport on me when traveling between Ireland and the UK. So I tried it once and showed them my German driving license. Of course, it was refused and I had to dig for my national ID card (which I had with me just in case). But if I had insisted on it, they would have had to let me through. Same situation with the work ID I would say: They are giving you grief because it is less common than the passports they see by the thousands every day. But if you want to put up a fight, they will let you pass.

This CTA thing is an absolute joke. It's pointless. We really should join Schengen - whether it will mean border checks with the North or not shouldn't matter.
