Howdy all, so I'm giving a presentation on gay rights in Ireland but I'm finding it difficult to find information on it.
It's basic layout is: Brief history of Ireland (under church rule or whatever), David Norris + Mary *insert surname here* :o, gay developments since 1993 and gay rights in 2011.
If anyone could point me in the direction of any information (preferably in the most basic, broken down form :p:p) on these headings and poor Mary's surname that'd be loverly.

Appreciate any and all help. :)

Is this for school or college? What course or subject is it for?

It's for college, I'm doing business in WIT.
The class is oral presentation and the assignment is ethics in business and/or society.
It's worth 50% so I'm kinda ****ing it like

Mary Robinson, as in the ex-president.

    Norris v. Ireland

As its for college I'd recommend working from the references in doors link, they never do like it when you cite wikipedia... The passage on discrimination protection should serve you very well given your course. What year are you in? That should indicate how in depth you need to go.

Have you tried sites like this one http://irishqueerarchive.com/ for information? There is more to the history of queer rights than camp senators and exceptional presidents.

I'm only a first year, so it doesn't have to be Barrack standards, I pretty much just need to prove I can stand up and talk for 10mins on a subject really.

Brief history of Ireland (under church rule or whatever)

We were not as such ruled by the church but here's a few pointers - laws on homosexuality in Ireland dated back to 1861
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_the_United_Kingdom
At the time of the formation of the United Kingdom, English law identified anal intercourse and bestiality as offences punishable by hanging as a result of the Buggery Act 1533. In 1861 section 61 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861 removed the death penalty for homosexuality. However, male homosexual acts still remained illegal and were punishable by imprisonment and in 1885 section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 extended the laws regarding homosexuality to include any kind of sexual activity between males. Lesbians were never acknowledged or targeted by legislation.

You also should briefly look at religion in the Irish Constitution - How is it mentioned - what role does it play; also possibly mention role of church in Mother and child scheme

, David Norris + Mary *insert surname here* :o

David Norris; Mary Robinson and McAleese - suggest looking at campaign homosexual law reform and also briefly look at Norris case judgements in 70s - Remember Norriss first High Court case was in 1977, then the supreme court case took place in 1983, then European court case took place in 1988, then decriminalisation in 1993, also worthwhile looking at what convinced Maire Geoghegan Quinn to do that

, gay developments since 1993 and gay rights in 2011.

Laws - are a big thing
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_laws_and_reports_on_LGBT_rights_in_Ireland

But also cultural acceptance - e.g. Tv shows such as growing up gay

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I realise that this is going off topic, ever so slightly. but since
I'm only a first year, so it doesn't have to be Barrack standards, I pretty much just need to prove I can stand up and talk for 10mins on a subject really
surely then you're not exactly proving that if you're getting people here to do your work for you?

It's not hard to find the links people are giving you. It's not difficult to google stuff yourself. It's not like the history of gay rights in Ireland is such a niche topic that you wouldn't be able to find this information if you used an hour of your time doing a decent search. Look: is it really so hard?

I'm not saying don't talk to people who are gay to find out what the state of play is here in Ireland in 2011. That's actually a pretty smart thing to do. Just looking back over some of the threads already posted here in the last few months, and reading peoples back and forth, will give you that. I just get really annoyed when people expect other people to do their work for them.

    Buy and read this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Terrible-Queer-Creatures-History-Homosexuality/dp/1905569238

Books Upstairs on Dame Street (just opposite Trinity's Front Gate) should have a copy.

Edit: Ah, you're down in Waterford. Their library may have a copy anyway.
