Does anyone know whether this is in KM or miles ?

I'm just checking the mileage on a car and it's not adding up.

    Cheers

It will be directly off the clock so depends on if the clocks are in miles or km :)

Divide the larger number by 1.6, if the result matches the lower number then it's just that one is miles and the other is kilometres.

    OK cheers.

I thought maybe their systems would allow for this and would convert miles to km if entered that way. Obviously when told by the tester.

I bought a car in February this year. Advertised at 49k Miles. It was 56k when I picked it up. I was heading away for the week so just emailed the dealer and said we could discuss it when I got back. I was thinking along the lines of extra warranty or something. There were a couple of other things that weren't as advertised. (No memory seats, no cd changer etc). Not bothered by these really but 6k is half a years driving to me and I plan to change again in a couple of years. The first thing I look for when buying is low mileage.

Anyway, ran a check and I can see that the dealer entered the mileage when he got the car in January 2011 at 49k on the INMR. But the figure on the NCT Cert from Jan 2010 is 72774.

If that figure is miles it's obviously clocked. If it's KM's it means the car did less then 4k Miles in a year. Possible but unlikely.

I suppose my suspicions come from the dishonesty regarding the mileage at point of sale but maybe i'm just being paranoid.

What would you guys think ?

Did you not test drive the car? I find it hard to believe you never spotted any of this pre-sale?

Test drove it one night. Liked it and paid a small deposit. Went back a couple of days later to see it in daylight and loved it. It was only on my way home when I was playing with the buttons and figured out how to change the odometer from KM's to miles that i realised something was up.

I didn't have the NCT cert until then and a car check wouldn't have shown any issues.

I just find it strange that he went to the bother of registering it at 49k miles in January and it's at 56k by February.

    It all smells a bit.

    Well what was his explanation?

He'd want to be a grade A * * * * (insert expletive of choice) to clock a car from 70k odd back to 56K after registering the mileage at 49K a few weeks previously.

Lets presume the 56K was a true reading in Feb 2011, that means it did over 10K miles since the NCT in January 2010, the NCT lads will take whatever reading is off the clock, I'd hazard a guess the clock was set to kms when it was NCTd.

You're probably right. But if he registered it at 49k he either registered it incorrectly or that's a hell of a lot of miles in a month. Cheers anyway.

You're probably right. Means he just chanced his arm and advertised it at 49k. My fault for for not checking thoroughly

Or a genuine error, these lads have so many cars, reg numbers and prices floating about in their heads it's not unusual for them to make a "clerical error"

What car is it? And what year?

Feck it. I like the car and either way it's not that far out. I'll just learn from it, enjoy the car and move on :)

I might be wrong, but if it was originally for Irish market, it should have odometer in km then.

You are indeed correct :), from 2005 on all cars sold here were in kms.

Can you bring it to a BMW dealer/specialist and get them to verify the mileage off the ECU?

What is the metric of mileage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭The Bishop Basher

The speedo is in KM but the odometer can be switched either way.

Good idea but would probably cost more money and to be honest i'm not that concerned. It cant't be more then 20k out if it is at all.

It's just that mileage is really important to me when i'm looking for a car. I suppose it's mea Culpa and lesson learned in terms of check, check and double check ;)

In fairness it would be well worth doing and shouldn't cost much at all, if there is 20K miles after being knocked off it you have been sold a clocked car, you mention mileage is important as you change frequently. Trying to get rid of a clocked petrol 2005 BMW in a year or two will be a challenge.

if i was a betting man, i'd say it was a mis type or mis conversion from km to miles either by the dealer or the NCT inspector. BMW have the mileage stored in 3 places on the car, the key, the ECU and the clocks themselves IIRC, so a simple call into a BMW dealer and ask them to swipe your key for a service information check, this will bring up a printed receipt with the stored mileage, and what service items are required on the car and when.

just tell them your trying to plan out the servicing for the next year or as money is tight, the way things are :D

Was going to suggest that you'd be able to advise on the exact procedure for mileage checking a modern BMW but I couldn't remember your user name :pac:

Nice one. I appreciate the advice and Will follow it up.

    Cheers :)
