Are unpaid workers allowed for my startup biz?

    Hi,
What are tax, financial and other implications for a startup sole trading business (not enough profit to pay Vat in first year) if another person requests some hours of voluntary working in that business, unpaid work experience in days/weeks or an internship in months? I have researched the ethical side and how colleges, charities and organisations run their programmes, but have not been able to find tax/financial info for a small biz. Do they stop you from doing it? Also tax-wise, for free or reduced rate vouchers as part of a marketing strategy. How does that work? And what if you put the two together, an unpaid worker gets a voucher for some free stuff, any restrictions?
I am working through marketing segmentation but this problem keeps coming up and may become an asset. The only thing I can find on revenue.ie is Bik for employees and that doesn't really answer this query. Please point me in the right direction.
    Much appreciated,
    Maria
P.S. Thank you very much to Enviro STP. Part 1: Segmentation http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056195003
