Had a quick search through the forum and was wondering would the Naruto and Shonen Bleach series of novels be ok for a 12/13 year old? They're for my son who is starting to show an interest in manga/anime. Was also wondering are there any good books on how to draw manga style art, as he would love to get into graphic design/animation.
    Thanks for any info.

    Cheers,

    One Piece.

Excellent art, storytelling, characterisation and narrative. It's printed in the same Shounen Jump magazine that Naruto and Bleach are serialised in.

Not only is it the most popular shounen comic in the magazine and Japan, it's the best selling manga of all time.

It's written for kids and teenage boys, though it's suitable for people of all ages.

    Can't be recommended highly enough.

Fullmetal alchemist is a brilliant anime/manga for a young lad! Grew up watching it and reading it myself!
I liked the anime better but alot of people will tell you the manga is better, it's down to his preference really

Is Shounen an actual printed magazine that is available easily, or can you subscribe to it?

Death Note is pretty awesome, don't know if its too dark for a 12 year old though.

Death Note is for 15yr old girls :pac:

Your boy is young, he needs to discover anime on his own IMO.

Just let him loose on torrent sites (but try to monitor what he's watching by giving it a quick overview on Wikipedia first).

    Hey, worked for me!

From what I've seen, that wouldn't instill confidence in most people :P

I second FMA and death note, particularly Full metal alechemist. Any stories of young boys growing up would be ideal and FMA deals with this theme in a powerful way.

Shounen is a genre of manga aimed primarily at young teenage boys, though when written well is regarded as being generally accessible by all age groups.

There are many comics magazines published in Japan that specialise in this genre, Shuiesha's Weekly Shounen Jump is the most well known and popular example of this.

You can occasionally pick up an English print of this magazine in Forbidden planet. You generally find one chapter of several manga inside, often including One Piece, Naruto and Bleach as the most popular IPs.

A better bet might be to just buy the collected Tankobans. This is what most people think of when they think of manga. A paper-back sized book containing five to ten chapters of a given work. If you want to follow a particular comic, this is probably the best way to do it.

Volumes tend to go relatively cheap on Amazon or The Book Depository.

I got the following and I'll see how it goes from there:

    Fullmetal Alchemist - Volume 1
    Naruto volume 1
    One Piece volume 1

Ordered from Amazon. If he prefers one over the other then we can continue on with that series. Never realised how VAST the Manga scene is!

Just to update, the books arrived yesterday, and they were very well received. He managed to finish Naruto before bedtime and is now started on One Piece. If anyone else has kids looking to get into Manga these seem to be good choices. Thanks for all the info , much appreciated.
