Guys, Training for the Kildare marathon in May... The heart and lungs are fine but as soon as I hit 8 miles my hamstrings become extremely tight and i have to stop ever other mile to stretch. I can go longer only for this.. Any tips on how to prevent this or ease it or is it an underlying problem? I stretch lots... I may not drink enough water however when im out on a long run i have a sports drink to sip on... Not much but just a small bit when im starting to fatigue.. What do u reckon.. Last marathon I did (5 -6 years ago) I really suffered with my left IT band, hamstrings and internal rotators... FOR 2 YEARS!!! So... Help or input would be great...

With these sort of things there is a multitude of reasons why it could be getting tight. The best thing you can do is see a physio or a specialist and in particular someone who is comes recommended and has experience with runners. Ask around before going to anyone. In the mean time all you can do is continue with your stretching and if you notice anything in particular thats tight give it a bit of extra time.

Tonic water with quinine is good for the cramps

This sounds like a case for the physio/osteopath, etc.
Drinking and and additional magnesium should help, but you may want to see if there isn't any underlying muscular/skeletal condition.

Dry Needling it might get rid of some of the tension and tightness but its unlikely to address the cause of the problem which is what you really need to get sorted out.

I've become a huge fan of proper sports massage.

Scar tissue builds up in muscles and can mean easy reinjury and lasting pain. A proper sports massage will break that stuff down and get rid of it for good.

Probably most effective if you've had the injury over 6 weeks, in other words if rest and ibroprophin hasnt cured it.

My advice for a long term lasting solution? Don't treat only the symptons -treat the cause! Or else it WILL come back. Get a good good physio

Luckily for me i didn't have to go down that road, changed physios fairly rapidly and the new one knew straight away and sorted it out within 2 sessions and set me on my merry way. Had i stayed with the old one, i'd be out of a house!
