FAS Training - Languages???

    Question...

Is anyone aware if FAS do language courses??
    And if not, why not??

I've hunted through their (extremely confusing) site and haven't found anything much about it. Surely it would make sense for them to run language courses - every job out there has some requirement for languages at the moment, and we're always being told we haven't got enough people who have other languages. Would language courses not be more helpful than some of the other fiddly stuff they run???

Can I suggest language courses to them, does anyone know??? If they did say Basic/intermediate/advanced courses in say French, German, Spanish, Dutch and maybe a couple of others, I'm fairly sure they'd have a good intake in them...

    Anyone???

    Very good idea!
I applied for a job that stated "knowledge of German helpful"
I ended up having an interview "Auf Deutsche"

Was rather peeved because though I speak German if I had known they wanted fluent German i'd have done some kind of refresher course as I haven't actively used the language in 5/6 years

Now... to actually answer your question :D

Fas Courses are available in the following areas:

    Office / Administration (241)
    Computer Hardware / Networks / Programming (106)
    Computer Applications (476)
    Construction Related (260)
    Engineering Related (164)
    Electronics / Industrial Servicing (93)
    Sales / Marketing (41)
    Transport / Warehousing / Distribution (117)
    Health / Beauty / Child Care / Welfare (131)
Pre Employment / Job Clubs / Return to Work (112)
    Self Employment / Enterprise (53)
    Animal / Land / Marine (7)
    Sports / Leisure (21)
    Other (196)

Under the "other" category are courses in:
    Manual Handling
    Health & Safety
    Security Personnel
    Culinary Skills
    Graphic Design

    etc etc

    No languages :(

Agree re FAS website... a bit hard to follow.

I think the fact that they don't do language courses has something to do with the education system and that it's the remit of the Department of Education to deliver language courses.

But I also agree that FAS should do this type of course.

Interestingly, I asked the exact same question of Fás when I had an appointment a couple of weeks ago. No assistance could be given. I speak a bit of Spanish and I'd love to go get the D.E.L.E qualification (equivalent of Cambridge profiency exam). I also asked about Irish, I'd love to do more with it.

So, you're not the only one. I think it would be great if they had retail training too. I don't think they have but it's a big sector generally.

So...I should find someone to float the suggestion with I guess?

I suggest a few other people "suggest" it too. See what kind of feed back you can get.

And maybe contact....Dept of Social whatever-it-is?? Is FAS under their remit??

This topic came upin a search, so I take it there's been no advancement in social welfare payments while learning a foreign language?
