sorry if this seems a little dumb, but I would like to have my cake and eat it

It'll need to be scrapped for the dealer to get the VRT rebate.

yeah...or you could just write to the Government and they'd send you the €1250....

In that case can I get the 1250 too; I'm not buying or scrapping a car just now but I'm a nice guy and feel I could use it. Not a penny will go on coke and hookers, promise...

Absolutely. Just as soon as you give the scrappy the €1,250 to buy the car back off the government before it's scrapped.

There must be a lot of good cars being scrapped if that's the case.

I've got a 10 year old with only 67k miles on the clock and while I've no intention of buying a new car to avail of the scrappage it'd seem crazy to me that the car would be scrapped when it'd easily go for another 10 years

you need an End Of Life Certificate from a scrap dealer / authorised recycler. My parents recently availed of the scrappage and they didn't have to take the car to the dealer at all. We live quite close to a scrapyard so we just dropped it there, got the cert and dropped it in along with all the other documents (They cleared it first with the dealer that it was alright to do it this way).

I suppose if you met an unscrupulous scrap dealer he might give you EOL cert without taking the car but if you have an incident in the car afterwards you would be pretty well ****ed I'd say. Don't know where that would leave the scrap dealer liability-wise either?

Can't do that as mentioned :)

But if you ask the dealer what's the straight sale price you may well be tempted to not scrap your car and to give it to your other half :)

    Is this a wind up?

You want a discount from the Government off a new car for scrapping your old car but don't actually want to scrap the car, instead keep it for someone else. I know the outgoing Goverment were a bunch of incompetent thickos but even they would not allow something like what you suggest to happen.
