Can the Garda speed vans catch cars coming towards it from the opposite side of the road? Now it wasn't one of the new Gatso's it was just a white transit with Garda on the side. I was wondering if the front can pick me up coming towards it on the opposite side of the road, now i didn't notice a flash but am just curious to know if they can pick it up from both directions?

As far as I know the Garda vans can't but the Gosafe vans can.

Hi there, I don't know if they can catch you traveling in both/either direction, but my gut feeling is that they can. Did you notice a flash? That is what I am wondering, if there has to be a flash from the camera even during the day?
Not really into speeding myself, but today while traveling on an unfamiliar back road, and paying too much attention to a car load of young fellows behind me, who were determined to overtake me at any cost, I took a bend and there was a garda camera van just as the speed limit dropped from 80 to 50 on the edge of a small village. Any info. would be very welcome

Thanks for your input. My feeling is that they work like normal cameras and flash depending on the daylight conditions. I guess I'll know for sure in the next couple of weeks

However, these ones (operated by the Gardai) do

We were talking about during the day - the way the old fixed point cameras did, regardless of light conditions.

Gosafes operate like CCTV cameras really and don't need a flash.

I was caught on the opposite side of the road driving towards the front of the van when I had my photo taken. It flashed when I passed it, during day light.

All very interesting. I don't know the range. All I do know is that when I turned around the bend there was the Garda van, I looked at the speedo, 65kph in a 50kph, in broad daylight, but no flash. I was on an unfamiliar road so I even did a u-turn to check the speed limit sign. Time will tell.

Gosafes operate like CCTV cameras really and don't need a flash.

They actually have an Infrared Flash, so they do, you just can't see it. Improves contrast on the black / white plate.

The Garda vans are being retrofitted to my knowledge with IR flash because its a danger to road users to be flashed in the face at night or even during the day.
