Hello, my 6 year old daughters new front tooth is coming down crooked and I'm thinking she may need braces at some stage, probably no chance it will correct itself? Her other baby tooth is loose now and time will tell whether the new one will be the same, Both mine and my wifes teeth have always been straight, never needed braces.

Don't be worrying yet, she'll have dental check up in school next yr and they will be able to tell if she's likely to need orthodontics.
I don't think the teeth thing is herititory from parents, my mam and dad both have beautiful straight teeth as do my 4 sisters, I was the only one who required braces to correct an eye tooth that never came down properly and a narrow upper jaw.

Like I said you can ask the dentist your daughter will see with the school and then If its likely she will need them I would start a little credit union fund and start the treatment as soon as an the ortho will allow.

Pleanty of time to save up, braces are not normally fitted until a child is around 13 years

As a matter of interest does anyone know the average price for braces in Dublin? Have been told that both my kids will need them in the next couple of years!

Cost me 4k for my daughters. It was a great job. A friend of hers got her braces done in north of Ireland. They had to drive up every so often. I thought they were mad for the hassle to save 1k. My daughter had to go back to her dentist because of pain and simple adjustments, imagine having to drive up the north for a simple adjustment....

Go to the orthodontist closest to your kids school so they can go on their own to the many adjustment visits. Having to take a day off work and off school put fuel in your car and drive up and down to the north (probably get something to eat also) is madness for a saving of often less than 500 euro over 3 years. You would spend more on petrol.

I brought my daughter to the dentist at 10 to get a crooked tooth checked out and while having a check up we discovered that her jaw was not growing at the same rate as her top jaw. This would have left her with a weak chin,Anyway to cut a long story short we opted for her to be treated & over the last 3 years she has had expanders and retainers and finally braces which have come off now -her teeth are amazing now and she is thrilled. She got an appointment for the school dentist this month which is an utter joke. The dentist also said we were lucky we brought her because girls go through puberty early and the teeth set and it takes longer to treat. Anyway it cost €2500 and it was money well spent over the last 3 years. I wouldn't wait if your worried for the school dentist.
6 years old may be too young but I wouldn't wait till 13.

    Hi there

Without seeing your child it is not possible to give you a definitive opinion but 6 is probably too young to start treatment, it is adviseable to have an orthodontist check a child's teeth about 8 or 9.

Adult teeth are usually spaced when they erupt and look very diffierent to the small white baby ones. Yes, orthodontic problems are usually genetic but most are easily treated. Treatment usually starts when the adult teeth are erupted, about 11 or 12 but sometimes it is a little sooner or later.

An orthodontist will charge 3500-4000 approx for treatment around dublin. Talk to your dentist, look up www.orthodontics.ie or talk with a friend for a recommendation

dont worry about it for now, focus on keeping the teeth clean and avoiding too much sugary snacks and drinks
