Driving in Mexico

I'm thinking about renting a car to travel for a few days in the Yucatan to save time and then do the rest of my trip by bus.
Anyone here have experience of driving around the areas of Cancun, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Merida, Uxmal?
From what I've read Yucatan seems to be a bit safer than the rest of Mexico for this sort of thing.
Just how risky is it and is it worth the hassle? What to expect, bad roads, bad driving, corrupt police? Any tips?

I'm in mexico right now. Not in Yucatan but around mexico city in a 500km or so radius. GPS maps inaccurate, signs all over the shop too. Drivers are aggressive and the rules are not always abided by, even red lights. Roads are of variable quality. B roads and below are unreal for massive speed bumps.

Not the worst country I have driven in but if you are not confident driving in situations where literally anything can happen, my advice, give it a miss

PS watch out for the compulsary insurance that has to be paid on top of the rental fee, it can be as much as 25usd per day and is often only in the small print

If you are a decent driver then you won’t face any issues driving there in Mexico. I have been there a couple of times, drove a rental car and it was not that bad driving there as it is in some countries. I rented a good car from http://mexicocarsrental.com/ it seemed a good car rental company. My personal experience was good driving there.
