Ok to run only 4 nuts on a 5 nut wheel?

I was tightening the wheel nut when the bolt broke. Is it safe to just use the remaining 4 nuts to secure the wheel? Car is an 07 Avensis and the offending wheel is on the back. Thoughts needed!

it would be ok to get you home, but best to tap and die it out and buy a new bolt for it

How much were you forcing it? Were you using a bar for leverage? I'd think it should be grand..You handy with a welder? :)

You might get away with it but you'd have to be nuts to risk it more than absolutely necessary...

Don't know if I made myself clear enough sorry. I was tightening the nut by hand onto the bolt (which is attached to the hub of the car) when this bolt failed. Meaning now there are only 4 bolts left in the hub with which I can secure the wheel with! Aim I calling these the right names? Kinda unsure so sorry if Im wrong:)

Whats required to fix it then? New hub?

The nut is off, the bolt broke :)
A garage will hammer out the remains of the old bolt and sort a new one handy enough.

Is any bit of the bolt left?
New hub shouldn't be required at all.

Yes theres a small bit as far as I can remember. Cost much to get it sorted?

An hours labour (presuming it's on a disc equipped hub and not a drum) and a few quid for a new bolt. Shouldn't be too much. Main dealer will suggest a new hub though I would think.

Haha..My apologies, I meant to weld a bolt onto the broken stud so it could be removed! Any garage should do this for...Shouldnt be too expensive...20 or 30 quid maybe?

Unless you're Superman or the Hulk I wouldn't be driving anywhere. If a bolt failed when you where hand tightening it I'd be very wary of the rest.

Haha when it happened I couldn't believe it. Will probably drop it into the dealership with the evidence to see what they make of it.
