Hi, I am a complete novice when it comes to photography but I am very interested in picking up a dslr camera to play around with. I will going travelling this summer around southeast asia and I would love to come home with very sharp beautiful photos and good quality hd movies of my travels.

These two cameras have really interested me and I am trying to decide between the two, Nikon D3100 and the Lumix G2. Now I do like the G2's lcd touchscreen, it makes focusing very handy but I like the way it has manual focus as well. I am so used to compact digital cameras that I would like to mess around with manual focus.

The images I've seen from the Nikon have really blown me away.

Has anyone had any experience with either?

I haven't had experience with either, but I do own a Nikon D90 and therefore recommend the D3100 purely because you're buying into a huge system. However, I've spoken to people who own the D3100 and they all love it.

    Get the Nikon, it's a no-brainer.

I've got the lumix and closed in on it too because I wanted to branch into the DSLR world so to speak. I find it to be a great "newbie" camera and it does take some very sharp pictures. Playing around with shutter speed the last few days and happy with the results.

Got a good deal on ebay where I got the camera body and 42mm lens plus two extra lens, UV filter, cleaning kit, camera bag, a large and small tripod, slave flash and 8G card for about E600. The biggest attraction to the camera was its low weight in comparison to other DSLR cameras - and I have to admit, the deal was pretty good too and gave me everything to get started with.

I've no experience with the other camera, but Nikons have a good name. I'm biased though and do love my camera. Damned good first "decent" camera.

have you thought of going secondhand?
the D3100 is nikon's entry level DSLR; nikon do make them well, but a secondhand D80 might be a bit more robust for travel.
