Any advice for improving sound on a laptop?

I bought a Samsung R730 recently. It works well except for one major irritation. The sound. It just doesn't cut it. My uses for a laptop are pretty basic but I like to have my head blown off by my headphones. I had a very old Dell 1501 which did just that though frankly that was about the only thing it did well. The sound of the Samsung at 100 is like the Dell at maybe 40. It's just a crushing dissapointment. I don't really mind the speakers being not mind shattering but I won't something good from my headphones

I'm willing to spend some money to improve the situation but ideally I don't want to have to drag around any extra pieces of equipment.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Being honest, How good are your headphones? i mean the correct headphones make all the difference. I have a set of AKG's and they are fantastic.

I find this works very well http://download.cnet.com/DFX-Audio-Enhancer-for-Windows-Media-Player/3000-2169_4-10033520.html although you have to pay for full version but its only around 15 euro

I run through more headphones than underwear so I can discern between them on quality. But the headphones I am using now work fine on my old laptop and my Ipod so I don't think they're the issue.

Also. I;ve tried fiddling around in sound properties but to little avail.

I don't really use Windows Media Player so I'm not so sure what value that would be to me.

Are these Analog Headphones using the laptop's headphone jack?

Perhaps you should consider Digital USB sound.

As an explanation, different headphones have different impedances. Eg. my CX300II buds are 16Ohm but my DT990Pro( <3 ) run at 250Ohm! Some ****ty onboards just cant hack it.

You dont need high impedance to get quality, so look for cans/buds with relatively low ratings(as well as positive reviews) if you plan on using your laptops own card.
