Is it possible to replace the steering wheel of a car which has built in Air Bag?

My one is very worn and would like a fresh one, otherwise is it possible to get a very thin leather cover for it. All the ones I have seen so far have been bulky.

Yes, it's quite possible. I had the dealer replace a nasty plastic wheel in a Multipla back in 2000 with a proper leather wheel.

You'll have to get a specific wheel for the car model, though, and have it fitted by someone who knows their airbags.

How much did it cost you?

Cheapest solution would probably be to buy an aftermarket steering wheel cover like below. They are just fitted over the existing steering wheel, no messing with air bags, etc.

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=steering+wheel+cover&_sacat=0&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&_odkw=leather+steering+wheel+cover&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

Some of them really look chavish though.

The process varies between makes but yeah you can. The airbag just sits in the centre of the wheel and have some cables running from it to the car so in essence you remove the wheel, disconnect the cables and replace with new wheel.
Do you want to change to another wheel with airbag?
What make car/year? Current wheel stock?

Its a Ford Focus 00. Would replace with another Air Bag one.

Would I be able to get one from a guy breaking his car or would I end up setting the Air Bag off?

I forget, it's a while ago. Give a main dealer a call, and ask them for a price. Then you'll have the worst case, and you can see what can be done using eBay/scrappies and so on.

I wouldn't try fitting it yourself if I was you, too big a downside if the airbag doesn't go off in a crash.

For Ford the airbag can be moved from old wheel to new wheel.
Always disconnect the battery for 30 mins or so before working on this if you decide to do it yourself. You don't want it deploying in your face when you remove the wheel.
You can google instructions, youtube has some vids.
For a new wheel you can look at places like www.fordpartsuk.com, maybe check out a few Ford sites etc.
