So, Sean Barrett is the new Ceann Comhairle!

I'm listening to his speech at the moment.

    FG, FF supported his nomination.
The Independents supported the nomination, but noted that they would have liked the Ceann Comhairle to have come from the Independents.
Sinn Fein also supported Barrett, but noted that they would have preferred the Ceann Comhairle to have come from the opposition.

He would like backbenchers to have a greater role in the House and says that he's "convinced some simple changes to procedures can make workings of the Dáil more dynamic".
He also said that he supports modernisation of procedures in the Dáil.

So, does the Ceann Comhairle have much power to change anything?

I was under the impression that his/her role was more of a babysitter, to keep a lid on the TDs if they are getting rowdy and to announce new business.

    *reveals further political ignorance :pac:*

At least he isnt a mumbling embarrasment unlike some of his predecessors but I doubt he has too much power to change things unless the coalition agrees with him.

per my rant on the other thread..... i hope it he changes the voting system. 45 minutes to take a vote which is a foregone conclusion is a joke. 1 min max.

They don't normally vote like that.

Normally they press a button and the results are tallied almost instantly.

    Today's vote is special.
