Thought I was onto a good thing the other day, managed to get an NBA Jam Extreme cab for €150, I was told at the time that there was something wrong with the monitor, but I thought to myself hey, the guy I'm buying it from never even looked into getting it fixed, or even tried to fix it himself (was a friend of my girfriends sister, who's no real interest in games, but just happened to have a cab!!!), so maybe there's something easy enough I can do to get it up and running.

So afer breaking my (and my friends back) getting it into my shed this afternoon, I tun it on, hear a really loud pop (more from the speakers than anything else), the screen stays blank, but by jaysus my ears nearly burst, the volume must be up full blast, but still nothing on the screen ... so I turn it off and cry and haven't gone back to it since :(

    Awh no! That's awful.

I'm not one to know anything about fixing monitors, but if it's not powering on at all, it might be something as straightforward as a dodgy cable.

Once the monitor in my old cabinet did the same, just stopped booting up. It turns out that the power cable going to it had some really bad connections.

The sound coming out of the speakers means at least there's power going to your board.

I'm going to let the real pro's help you trouble shoot, but remember the cab is over 15 years old. It's going to take some TLC to get it working again! Post up a few pics of the cab to get the ball rolling.

The pop was likely power going to the game board as mentioned above, are you hearing game sounds from the cab at all? A monitor fault shouldn't prevent the board from functioning (although attract mode may be muted etc so it's not a proper check).

I can fix monitors once I know what the problem is, diagnosing problems with them is another art form altogether. There's HOT resistors, flybacks, neckboards, IC's, resistors, diodes & caps amongst lots of other things that can fail. Your best bet would be to take some pics of the monitor chassis, & post up on the monitor section of byoac here - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=437c54c07b9762f8d20f2a4bdb2c148f&/board,4.0.html There's some real proper techy's there who will help id the problem.

I'll take some pics and post them up ... the cab is in great shape ... I didn't think cabs existed that were this clean, inside anyway ... outside was a bit grubby, but not as bad as my supreme cab.

I suppose though at the end of the day I'd take a manky cab that worked aver a spotless one that didn't. Never judge a book by it's cover :pac:

Cab's arn't like consoles though, there's always going to be maintenance needed, a repair here, a fix there. They're almost organic in that sense, like living creatures :D

When you buy a cab, these things are a given, & I'd take any cab working or not. The innards are just pieces that can be fixed, but the cab is the cab & strangley it's what's outside that matters.

Post your problem up on the link above with pics, they'll give you some headway on the problem.

Sound like it was the HV to the monitor went puff.I would disconect the power to the monitior, turn down the volume if you think it was that, cover your ears and power up!!you should hear the board play,if its working.

Turn off the power and check the HV unit, just follow the HV lead from the top of the monitor down its would be at the side/back of the monitior board.check for arking, burn marks. If it did go bang like you said then there should be signs of damage.

I'm only getting the hang of wiring buttons, this monitor problem has come too soon for me I think :pac: Next on the agenda was supposedly to be soldering cables, not fixing monitors :(

Anyways, here's a few pics of my lovely (but not working properly at present) cab :o

Just so you know, but I've yet to get the control panel back on as I've no one to give me a hand...though doubt that would have any impact on the monitor!

Wow, I've never seen an arcade cab as clean as that on the inside  Looks immaculate, must have lived in a hospital or something :D

Anyway, take a pic of the monitor chassis & give us a look.

Well what do ya know, I had a look in the control panel and there was a connection for the monitor!!!

Connected all back up and she's working like a charm :D ... the connector must have come loose when that other guy had it, so the monitor seemed to stop working.

yeah got really lucky, as I said the guy just wanted rid of it, he told me he went down the route of checking the prices of cabs in the US (cos he couldn't really find many cabs for sale here) and deducted what he thought a new monitor might cost. If he'd been charging Irish or UK prices I guess I'd have forked out 250 for it.
