Getting a car back on the road, few questions

So, I'm getting my brother's old car. It's been off the road for over a year, but I don't think it was declared off the road.

What's the deal with getting it back? Will I have to pay back taxes on it? What checks should I do on it to make sure it's good to go? So far I'm pretty sure the battery is ****ed.

It's a 98 Micra, 1L. Quite the beast. I'm going to miss power steering so ****ing much...

No, you won't need to back date, just pay from the month it changed ownership into your name. You are only responsible for motor tax from that day forward. You won't be held liable for any back taxes and will your brother.

Make sure you complete the change of ownership form RF200 which you can get in any Motor Tax office, Garda station or, public library.

Brakes! If it's been sitting that long it wouldn't be unusual for the brake calipers to be pretty stiff. I'd also be concerned about the brake lines etc. I'd get the whole brake system checked out by a mechanic to be on the safe side.
but I don't think it was declared off the road.

You don't do that until it's going back on the road. You go to the cop shop, tell them it was off the road, and they stamp a form for you which you can then use to tax it form that date onwards.

Cheers lads, looks like I'll be heading into the Gardai tomorrow to try get this sorted out. Hoping to get it on the road before Paddy's day.

Oh, while I'm here, insurance, anyone particularly good for new drivers (Named drive up to now)?

Oh, one other thing, I read in a thread here from a while back that I'd need to get a certificate of road worthiness since it's been off the road. Any truth to this?
