I have had my laptop for 4 years now and for college reasons I need a smaller cheap laptop to run Linux on.

Is there such a thing as buying a blank laptop with no OS or additional software to save on cost. I am after all a student and want to keep cost down to minimum.

    Thank you Boards

Yes, you do see it the odd time. But in reality, with the likes of netbooks you're just not going to find them around. I can't imagine there would be much of a saving at all really. Windows 7 starter costs them next to nothing.

If it's something cheap you want, then i'd look second hand tbh.

Buy a blank laptop and you could run into difficulties with downloading and installing drivers etc, the manufacturer will then try to wash its hands in it blaming you if there is an issue

Great thing about linux is is can run well on really really rubbish systems. Find the cheapest latop you can on adverts and just do a fresh install of ubuntu or whatever flavour you want.

You can get Lappies with no OS from www.computerbargains.co.uk.

Not sure if this is any use to you, but you should be able to buy a laptop and get a refund for any software that is pre-installed on it so long as you don't accept the EULA, including the Windows OS. You may want to make sure that this can be done in Ireland first tho, rather than have to bring whatever company to court.
