Thought it was hilarious on the news where they had a load of women giving out about gender inequality in Ireland, and lack of female representation in the Dail, and then 20 minutes later they had hordes of teenage girls roaming Dublin wetting their knickers and screaming everytime someone with a Justin Bieber haircut wandered into view!!

It was originally declared a holiday in the USSR as a celebration of the contributions by women to the Soviet war effort during WWII, so if we traditionally celebrate it less than other countries it's probably because we missed out on all that craic. That said, it's now celebrated in a diverse range of countries and promoted by Amnesty International so you needn't feel like too much of a communist if you treat the women in your life a little extra nice today.

It seems to be taken a lot more seriously in the former Eastern Bloc countries than over here (and most people there these days would get pretty pissed off at any suggestion that they were Communists)

The Eastern European cleaner in our office came in this afternoon with daffodils - when I complimented her on them she explained that a girl in the office in her other cleaning job had rushed out and bought them for her in honour of Int Women's Day...............thought it was lovely:)
